Some #haiku to close up the night

Made it through the day, hanging on a bit at the end of it. Like a horse pointed to the barn, I forgot all about something I was supposed to do on the way home. I blame the rainbows I saw including one that seemed to end on my car. I vented a bit about stuff that annoys me. I laughed at some stuff that was pretty darn funny. I sewed some ridiculous bits of fabric to others equally ridiculous regardless of what anyone else thinks. I learned something new that a friend sent along my way. Dipped my toe into something I’d only heard about. I wrote these few haiku. I’m off to slip into the Mabinogian before sleep.

nights, wishing on stars
the warm spring air vibrating
with wishing for you.

it’s dark inside there
when you close your eyes, it’s dark:
not always the night.

nearby, birds compose
as night and day change places
telling of the world.

Sometimes, #spam is like fuzzy puppies and kittens

You can’t help but smile sometimes when you read spam mail. Some of it is disgusting, some is very commercial, some is ridiculously spammish but then, every once in awhile you get one like this:

What has 2 legs 1 head and writes decent posts... THIS AUTHOR DOES.

I’m really not sure if I love it because of the upper case ending or the lack of question and exclamation marks. So much goes unsaid and understood here. But I do love it.

Things that make you go hmmm

Looking at this rather heart-stopping Birds in Air pattern quilt from the early 1800’s in the current Quilters Newsletter Magazine.

As you can see in the photo, the maker used two different and striking border prints. They’re different widths to take advantage of the print.

The print article notes

“The butted, rather than mitered, borders do not indicate lack of skill — it was simply the style at the time.”

Seriously? I look at the pattern which indicates it’s a five inch block. This means the small triangles/half square triangle units are one inch finished size. there are 11 by 14 rows of squares which means there are 154 blocks each having eighteen pieces making a total of 2772 pieces without the four border strips, 2464 of which are one inch finished triangles.

So yeah. I think the butted borders don’t indicate lack of freaking skill on the part of the quiltmaker.

Late night #haiku

There are some things you can do while you’re cutting and ironing and doing all that fabric stuff and that includes rolling haikus around in your head and getting them into digital form.

the day’s long rain fall
pours sap green, all shades, slowly
to fill up the hills.

Counting little squares
truing up each jagged edge
making a big pile.

I’m sick and mainly
because people don’t stay home
when sick anymore

The wet ground is soft.
Mowers kept still by the rain;
watching the grass grow.

Checking those notes

Got out my trusty notebook tonight to see what the heck it is that I’m supposed to be doing.

Well, my sketch and notes say I need somewhere between 260 and 297 squares and I’ve got 160 in some form of being done. That means I better get on the ball! According to the math I use that means a whole bunch more to do allowing for some to fiddle around with and discard.

And that, friends, is why I keep notes as I go, so I don’t have to do the stinking math over and over again.

I do have more done than I thought I did but I’d still rather be a little further along. I am liking the way the squares look.

If only the rest of life were as easy to figure out, huh?
