A week of modern living.

I had two haiku inspired by real life events this week. There may be a third one brewing but we’ll see.

The first, an “I know I’m home sick but am I hallucinating phone calls now?” sort of experience:

what the etiquette?
I find I’m emergency
contact for my ex…

the second, true-life work experience:

Caps lock on iPad?
gently explain: ‘that’s shouting.’
‘LET THEM BE PISSED OFF.’

I’ve been pondering the third as haiku, although I normally do better when I’m sitting in a quiet room with a keyboard than in between questions at work.

Today a woman said to me, “Those shoes look incredibly comfortable. I’m tempted to kill you and take them off your feet for myself.”

I said, laughing a little, “Oh, these are my birkies – birkenstocks.”

She leaned closer. “I know.”

Me (trying not to be too creeped out), “But I had to go all the way to Ohio to get them!”

So there you have it folks. Fact is always stranger than fiction. Well, most of the time.

And to think that a year ago I was about to embark on my couple of months of whirlwind quilt show travels. Seems very long ago that I was in the role of the “famous quilter”.

Why be protective of your art?

In an interview with Vidal Sassoon on Fresh Air, Terry Gross asked him what he thought about the “neighborhood cuts” which were based on his iconic work with cutting hair. He replied:

“We were totally flattered, you see. You either create something and you keep it a secret and you die with it…what’s the point? If you can benefit a craft… and in essence from that benefiting of the craft you’re doing something for fashion world-wide, I think that’s so much more important, it’s something that you leave behind, that you’ll probably be remembered for.”

So there you go. Hold on tight and take it with you, or set it free in the world. Your choice.

Friday Reveals

Having revealed that I might be described by a scottish adjective, I will go on to reveal that I spent some quality moments admiring the use of really large diamonds (and some small ones too) that will be part of a display celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s, yes, diamond jubilee. I will further reveal that I was particularly drawn to The Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, although the larger stones in scepter, crown and pendants were extremely nice.

Furthermore, I will reveal that last night I was too tired to sew tiny seams straight so I pretty much didn’t do anything except the few haikus I shared with you.

And lastly, I will reveal that if I put my head down right now, I am pretty sure I’d be asleep in short order.

Before I do that, I’m putting this in to remind me to watch it later before I actually do go to sleep:

Great word and just the right one

From the Oxford Dictionary:

This is why #Scottish is fabulous: it has given us adjectives like ‘shoogly‘ (meaning unsteady or wobbly)!

Keeping the #haikus going

Don’t have much to report today. But I’m trying to keep a finger in on the NaNoWriMo writing, trying to do a little at lunch and scribbling down a few haiku per day. Quilt block building continues as well.

gold ribbons through woods
pouring over the earth’s edge
last light of the day

yesterday’s rainbows
full across the sky ahead
one touches my car.

each morning the same
the domed door of the mailbox
lottery du jour.

the epic tale done
the bodies hacked and bloodied
they all went back home.

hogs in the next yard
rooting hoping scrabbling
screaming for their food.

Caps lock on iPad?
gently explain: ‘that’s shouting.’
‘LET THEM BE PISSED OFF.’
