Looking at this rather heart-stopping Birds in Air pattern quilt from the early 1800’s in the current Quilters Newsletter Magazine.
As you can see in the photo, the maker used two different and striking border prints. They’re different widths to take advantage of the print.
The print article notes
“The butted, rather than mitered, borders do not indicate lack of skill — it was simply the style at the time.”
Seriously? I look at the pattern which indicates it’s a five inch block. This means the small triangles/half square triangle units are one inch finished size. there are 11 by 14 rows of squares which means there are 154 blocks each having eighteen pieces making a total of 2772 pieces without the four border strips, 2464 of which are one inch finished triangles.
So yeah. I think the butted borders don’t indicate lack of freaking skill on the part of the quiltmaker.
Not a bad quilt for the quilt level LOL I thought what?????
