Today

started with a beautiful full rainbow against a polarized lit and very wet world and ended with a beautiful full moon floating in a sky of very dark clouds in a dark sky. Lot of weirdness inbetween but it was worth it for those two short moments.

Things that make you wonder

I have three major bread books. I haven’t put them on my digital kitchen scale but maybe I should. I was noticing this weekend that the three together make a heavy pile o’books quite unlike any other piles of related cookbooks I might organize. I can’t come up with any theories except that you should be in shape from or need to get in shape for lifting all that flour. Huh….

The Day After

I’ll be honest. Our family has never been huge on vegetables or wide-ranging in the “acceptable vegetable” dept. So, it was heart-warming to see a table that had:

  • mashed potatoes (of course, but still a veggie)
  • sweet potatoes (ditto for most)
  • green beans
  • mashed squash (buttercup squash because I could not secure a hubbard squash and hence could not fulfill the traditional throw-the-hubbard-squash-up-into-the-air-so-it-lands-on-the-driveway-by-twilight (so it breaks open as dictated by the force of gravity etc)
  • carrots
  • parsnips (in case you were wondering what the photo from yesterday was, yeah, that’s the trimmings from parsnips)

Added to turkey, stuffing, two types of cranberry, rolls, two types of pumpkin pie…. well a good time was had by all.

Things that happen while driving to work

One morning I was driving to work and I had a couple of thoughts. But I was driving, couldn’t write anything down, couldn’t even fumble around and get the ol’ iphone voice memo thing working etc. I don’t like to fumble around with things electronic while driving, no matter the good cause. A few minutes later when I pulled into the parking lot, the thoughts were totally gone. Not a trace of them other than the notion I’d had something worth having thought of. I mentioned this to a friend but what are you going to do.

The next morning I got in my car to go to work and about a half mile down the road the whole thing came back to me. I tried not to get too excited. Honestly I hadn’t given a shred of preparation to – what if it happens again! I had quite a drive ahead of me too so I decided I would just repeat the bits to myself a few times until hopefully they’d have stuck or at least be retrievable.

Still a little bit in progress, but here you go:

Morning Commute

The coffee kicks in.
My age this year
is a speed limit.
Ha! Does it hold me back?
Sometimes I’m faster
Sometimes I’m slower
Sometimes I’m the only traveller
Alone on the road.

I near my off-ramp
I see more or less of my days
as the road goes ahead
straight or curving
Sometimes I’m only a traveller
and the road my familiar.
