National Poetry Month Day #14

Well it seems as though NaPoWriMo and Not Without Poetry have crossed paths at last, here on Poem in Your Pocket Day.

I’m trying to learn this poem.
I copied it out of a book
It’s been traveling with me
like an old friend with secrets.
The paper grows softer.
It seems less sharp-edged.
But the words when I’m
reciting still have some
spots that are missing.
When I go back and read them
the words fit perfectly. Perfectly.
I carry the poem in my pocket.
I hold the poem in my hands. I love it.
Will I ever be able to recite it by heart?

And if there were any doubt, it is this poem that makes me slap my forehead in the exquisite word placement and my inability to put those words in the right places by memory.

National Poetry Month Day #13

Today’s Not Without Poetry prompt had the most amazing photo. I’m not sure I managed to purge all adjectives but I think this had to be written for that photo. NaPoWriMo said write within 5 min. I didn’t hit that mark for sure.

Wakes

The day was long
This day of dancing.
At dawn the sound
was soft in the mist.
The folks walked behind
witness and celebrant.
The musicians walked along,
gathering from place to place.
The dancers, men of town,
mystery had from fathers.
They bore aloft the antlers
kept by the church,
the horns of animals
not known here.
The maid, the hunter, the hobby.
In a year I shall bear the triangle
as once did my father,
so I went along
this year with my raven
as though we were the fool.
After the dance
and the crawl,
after the compline
the men took me and the others
and put on us
marks of our positions.
I was proud to pose with my raven
before the photo
of my triangle.

And in haiku-news, I did actually write the three haiku on my entry form. Hope the organizers have a sense of humor about them LOL. On the other hand, I don’t exactly know what a narrative for a quilt would be, so I think I covered my bases.

Short Artist Bio (with alternate ending)

A machine quilter,
Herder of cats, love fruitcake,
Upstate New Yorker.
(Writer of Haiku)

Brief Narrative Quilt #1, in two parts

Cotton and silk bits
Machine-pieced, machine-quilted
All-cotton batting.

Count each day’s passing
Throw your thoughts into a pool
Keep still and keep watch.

and finally a haiku tweeted earlier today:

Purry furry cats
Sleeping off the afternoon
Will dinner wake them?

Always interesting.

Facings on (note to self: smaller quilt makes the ends of sewing along the edges come surprisingly quickly).

Back on the wall and delinting and straightening etc.

Haiku #3

Imagine surprise
I reach for some black fabric
The bolt is empty.

looking for black fabric for facings. Where is that bolt? How weird. Look in front room and there is the empty bolt cardboard and in a pile, a small chunk of black. That was a fast 15 yards lol.

Have enough though. Have strips not cut into squares for this quilt so a little bigger and the chunk will do for the top sleeve/facing.

Whew.
