The to-do list

Out of the blue tonight, while I was writing the traditional to-do-pack-list came into my brain: you need to be able to do a short talk about Solveig at Quilt National. Eeks!

Turns out it’s 3 minutes at the Saturday morning VIP viewing time slot.

Three minutes.

I dredged up the short verse I’d written in my journal and an haiku I’d sent a friend as a somewhat joking artist statement. I looked at the info I’d gathered about what the name could mean. I remembered that the play was by Ibsen and the opera by Grieg. I listened to the recording I’d found most accidentally that had led me to the name in the first place (better in the original Norwegian).

Perchance both winter and spring will pass,
and next summer, and the entire year:
but at last you will come, that I know for sure;
and I’ll still be waiting, for I once promised I would.

Well. That’s all I have for now.

This should be post #200 for 2011

Long day at work, starting with a several hour meeting at 7 AM and ending outside of work at Browns Brewery in Troy to send off a couple young coworkers on their next big adventure. In between those two points, a whole lotta craziness and weirdness, LOL.

I did a couple pieces of the scavenger hunt exercise for Silliness 4, having found the pencils of varying softnesses which I knew I had. I even cracked open and drew into a specially purchased sketchbook. What did I draw? A little tiny elephant from my brain and a one-liner type drawing of an actual shoe, in this case a birkenstock.

I do like doing this class, although I hadn’t planned on doing it again so soon. It does make me do something different each day and think about drawing most days. Coming so close on the heels of National Poetry Month, I confess when there are haiku or poems as part of the silliness homework I probably go a little overboard. (PS I figured out how to add additional pages to the haiku link above, so I’ll add more as I go there.)

The exercise the other day was interesting – we were given a photograph of a woman smiling and then a bare drawing of her, with no details or shading. Our mission was to squint our eyes as we looked at the photo and then drawn the rest of the picture into the drawing provided, using shading. This tied in a recent look at negative space too, but was a good look at how to squint to determine the important darks and lights and mediums. Being given the minimal face drawing really took the burden off “drawing a face” and let me concentrate on the assignment. Use shading.

I use that squinting technique a lot – it’s an old friend. So much more important than picking colors in many ways. Squinting always tells you how your fabric choices are going, even if the colors lie to you, even if the color is just the most wonderful color/fabric ever made or bought by you personally.

OK, off to sleep. I hope I don’t dream of turkeys. I’ve seen so many along the roads in the past few days I feel like they’re everywhere, but so far I’ve not been awakened by any. Let’s keep it that way.

Silliness meet National Poetry Month…

Today’s Silliness 4 worksheet asked us to write a story or poem about a rabbit provided by Carla:

Frezon 4.17

I pondered what to draw behind that wonderful rabbit but it all came out as words:

In one ear
an almost whisper
distant fox
sliding through tall grass
seeking, always seeking
sampling the air
his fine whiskers tremble
at the thought of rabbit

In the other ear
the gardener, clumsy,
picking up the hoe
and shovel and rake
rolling the barrow
back to the shed
leaving the limp weeds
between the rows
of tender lettuce
and tiny carrots.

a bit later:

In one ear the fox.
The other rabbit ear tuned
to tender lettuce.

Retracing

Did I already use retracing as a title? who knows, LOL.

I’ve been thinking about this passage in The Mists of Avalon where she turns back to her role as priestess after many years of denying her training and gifts.

…I did not know how, or whether, alone, I could do what I had begun, but as I had been made priestess so many years ago and renounced it, so must I retrace my steps alone. This night I had been given a great grace; but I knew there would be no more signs for me and no help given until I had made myself, alone, unaided, again the priestess I had been trained to be.

…Alone, and with no more than a fading memory, I must somehow recapture all the things I had once known as part of myself.

It took Morgaine years to retrain and remember her training from Avalon, until aided by the fairy people she regains her sight and resumes her power.

That’s a long way around to say that part of working is rummaging through your stuff from time to time to re-acquaint and remember what’s there, discard what’s no longer of interest and re-place the stuff you keep into your brain’s pile of stuff you might want to use some day. LOL that sounds so much more mundane that Morgaine’s work, eh? But no less magical, I assure you.

My sewing room is a mess in some places and less messy in others at the moment. Today I intend to spend some time doing likewise outside those doors, if only because a person needs clean forks from time to time. Now that’s seriously mundane.
