If we listened to our intellect, we’d never have a love affair. We’d never have a friendship. We’d never go into business, because we’d be cynical. Well, that’s nonsense. You’ve got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down. — Ray Bradbury
From the Quote Box, Bradbury
#haiku for the eve of National Haiku Day
The tall glass with ice
two thin slices of orange
schweppes tonic water.
Finally, heat lifts
the sprawled limp cats roll over,
cooling other side.
Tomorrow’s haiku
counting thoughts and syllables
counting routine hours
The night draws round us
The spring has leapt to summer
Day’s heat withdraws now.
Will you haiku me
tomorrow all day and then
write another one.
Once you get to ten
the next and the next haiku
roll right off the pen.
Day 16 #NaPoWriMo2012
Long day and I’m glad for the ice I’d gotten to keep the Oscar’s cold – I’m having lots of COLD beverages.
Decided that tonight I could show a more mischievous side of the month:
25.
Night. Very quiet.
The cat is asleep.
The dog is asleep.
You are asleep.
A spoon
carefully thrown
hits the dog
and startles the cat
the dog barks
and runs after
the cat who runs
away from something.
But you know this
because
you’re awake now too.
I sit on the top
of the china shelf
and laugh and laugh.
The cat hides.
The dog is
escorted out.
You go back to bed.
I laugh and laugh.
and then
I laugh some more
while the cat and dog
look in through the window
and you lie awake
in the moonlight.
Monday, the day off version
Drove up north to see a realtor about the camp and looked around a little and chased away a few cobwebs.
It was warm on the way up, but on the way home the car insisted the outside temp was 91°F! and how do you convince the car’s AC to work again? I never did figure it out during the trip. Add that to the next dealer trip which should be soon enough.
Stopped at Oscar’s Smoked Meats in Warrensberg to pick up a few things and noticed other people getting lunch to go. I was starving at that point so I made the most of it: smoked brisket – yummy!
Little side trip to Adirondack Quilts shop (never know when you might need some new fabric, right?) and then home again.
Must be time for haiku and daily poem etc but I’m still rehydrating.
Four unrelated #haiku for day fifteen
Essence of orange
the oil of peel flying up
to my eager nose.
I wore a sweater
and, the day too warm for it,
left it by the door.
Tonight’s setting sun
rippled bright through the windows
and crept up the walls.
Fingers, off the keys,
lift up the forgotten pen
to scratch the paper.
—- and a last minute bonus —-
My old fountain pen
cleaned and refilled and writing.
My fingers gladdened.
