Day 18 #NaPoWriMo2012

Was lucky enough to hear former Poet Laureate Billy Collins on WAMC radio this morning. What a pleasure. He read from Horoscopes for the Dead and had fun talking with AMC’r Joe Donohue who’s just great at interviewing authors.

NaPoWriMo’s Maureen sounded like she could use a nap, here on the downward slope of National Poetry Month, and suggested writing a lullaby. I have to say it was fun and very calming to write.

27.

The day grows blue and quiet
the shadows deep and violet
All day the sun has watched you
Now the stars and I shall guard you
I’ve you in my arms
my littlest child, go to sleep.
Sweetest dreams, baby mine, good night

The flowers have all gone to rest
The birds are tucked safe in their nest
The cat is safe in his bed at home
Soon you’ll be asleep in your own small home
I’ve you here in my arms
my littlest child, go to sleep.
Sweetest dreams, baby mine, good night

The tall lady who lives nearby
sings to her own babe, lulalie
We’re tucking you both in for the night
May your dreams bring you smiles all through the night
I’ve you in my arms
my littlest child, go to sleep.
Sweetest dreams, baby mine, good night

Here’s your soft bed til returns the day
moonlight and starbeams will light your way
Dreams full of flowers and play will come true
tomorrow another day waits for you.
I’ve you in my arms
my littlest child, go to sleep.
Sweetest dreams, baby mine, good night

The magic that keeps thee shall shine
like the stars above on my baby so fine
Naught to fear for you through the night
and tomorrow will be your joy and delight.
I’ve you in my arms
my littlest child, go to sleep.
Sweetest dreams, baby mine, good night

The end of day 17

So I wrote my single theme-related poem. I liked it enough. Perhaps worth tinkering with. But, then I turned to the serious business at hand, catching up on the side project. I started. The first few haiku are always slower, and I re-read the last few to get back in the story line. Soon I was a handful away from being caught up. I was tempted to keep going but I did not. I wrote a few miscellaneous and unrelated haiku and one chuck norris haiku, just for old times’ sake.

What I found most interesting about writing the 30 or so for the side project is that a few in – there on the path laid a plot twist. What can you do? Apparently I can’t even stay in charge when the work is seventeen syllables at a time.

I should go back to the NaNoWriMo project where all hell was breaking loose for the main male protagonist. Did I really intend to leave him sweating and shaking in his boots until I caught up with haiku? That seems rather cruel.

Oh well, sorry Matt! Here are the last random haiku of day 17.

if gnomes were helpful
I would admire their housework
as though it was art.

Perhaps my trash cans
are too tall for nearby gnomes
I’ll take out the trash.

Dear gnomes, i’d please you
if you could just tell me where
to find gnomish mops

In other worlds they bow
and worship at the altar
that is Chuck Norris.

Today’s Haiku

Started off with a haiku that didn’t quite fit the mold, although I really liked the strange concept. Oh well. It was a tip of the hat to the Day 17 NaPoWriMo prompt which was a wonderful mix of weirdness.

The Desperado,
Apple, thinking different
defines possible.

too warm for april
last night we were melted pools
waiting for spring’s breeze.

song renewing in mind
you’re almost there, almost there,
need just that last line.

These poems of poise
waiting for dawn, or for love
let me start the next.

Dinner. What’s to eat?
Frig holds possibilities
and some dark secrets.

Yesterday: too hot.
Today: not quite seasonal.
Tonight: frost warning.

Turn away from this
the daily, the most common
reach for the rarest.

Day 17. #NaPoWriMo2012

26.

Sweet china dish
I see you there each night
filled with milk for me,
bit of bread leaning
on the golden rim.
If I come early
I might see you
there on the table
with a pat of butter
ready for my favorite
to grace her bigger slice.
Then she wipes you
with the bread she set aside
she adorns it with
a slice of berry
she fills the dish
from the creamer
and sets it on the sill
for my nightly repast.

The Edict – nailing it to the door.

After dinner I announced to the cats that I was going in there, I was going in there, I was going to eat chocolate. Going in, writing chocolate and writing epic haiku.

They looked a little stunned.
