Why be protective of your art?

In an interview with Vidal Sassoon on Fresh Air, Terry Gross asked him what he thought about the “neighborhood cuts” which were based on his iconic work with cutting hair. He replied:

“We were totally flattered, you see. You either create something and you keep it a secret and you die with it…what’s the point? If you can benefit a craft… and in essence from that benefiting of the craft you’re doing something for fashion world-wide, I think that’s so much more important, it’s something that you leave behind, that you’ll probably be remembered for.”

So there you go. Hold on tight and take it with you, or set it free in the world. Your choice.
