A few #haiku

Small squares slashed and sewn.
How can you tell of the world?
Can you tell my heart?

Gentle percussion
thrumming of rain on night’s leaves
fading into day.

Oh watermelon
tasting like the pink you are:
Cool, sweet and quenching

Squares stuck on my wall
you intrigue me as you grow.
More than I hoped for.

what you find out

I have about half the center squares stuck up on the wall and it’s looking pretty darn good. I was keeping an open mind but I love it when there are little surprises I couldn’t predict. Woot! Sometimes things just play out differently than you might expect and that can be a bad thing or a good thing. Tonight it’s looking like a good thing!

Now, what did I do with all the brown squares I thought I had ready to go? I was feeling like I had enough but I don’t see many different fabrics at the moment. Hmmm.

On the wall

I’m spending the rest of the day trimming up squares and as I get groups of them, I’m sticking them up on the wall. I think the final total I’ll need is 11*26 or 286 pieced squares. That gives me a reasonable shape and size and I can still tinker with it if I want to.

Meanwhile I’m thinking about how last year I was about to fly out to Ohio to Quilt National. Tonight I’m listening to the news about new pricing structures re where in the plane you sit and making it harder for families to sit together. Hate all this nickle and diming of costs for luggage, etc etc. I won’t get into the lack of food. I’m pretty sure if there’s a difference in price I’m going to say I’ll sit where ever I can pay the least, all seats leaving and arriving at the same time.

Oh Fountain Pens, we love you still!

After seeing random mentions of fountain pens in various places, and looking at some purveyors of said objects of desire, I found two long-forgotten, rather inexpensive version in my desk organizer, along with cartridges for them.

Hmmmm. What are the chances of them working I thought. Just as I would have in the days of regular use, I ran some barely tepid water through the nib part until ink started to appear in the sink. I shook out the water and blotted the nib and popped in a fresh cartridge.

Talk about instant gratification. Perfect smooth writing. The second one I did is from a “calligraphy” set which is fun in a different way but it was just as willing to spring into life. I don’t imagine I’ll be turning from the easy flow of finger and keyboard to longhand writing (but it is so romatic, eh?) but I am glad to resurrect these two old friends.

Today’s mention of fountain pens and why people still love them is from this article on the BBC: Why are fountain pen sales rising?

How many?

Checked the notebook and it says 260 or 297 as the target numbers. I think I’ll trim up and then decide. It may be that I need to add a bit of lighter or darker to the mix.
