Day 13 — NaPoWriMo

To my old cat, sleeping

You sleep more now and deeper, kitty,
friend I’ve known longer than most
your delicate nose and chin are now white
below your sweet, silken whiskers.
You talk more now, to me and to yourself,
roaming around in the dark quiet house
maybe to tell the unguarded world
you’re yet keeping watch over our rest.
You still excel in quality control
rating each of the warm window spots
moving as the day swings around the house
saving each drop of heat for the night
In your heart, and in mine, is still
the crazy kitten I fell in love with.

K – NaPoWriMo

This large cat, filling
the crook behind my bent knee —
kittenish no longer.

the blank kitten stare,
looking, pouncing, waiting look:
grows knowing with age.

Cat, too large to lift,
content now to sleep on lap
once a small kitten.

Sleep my agéd cat —
in my memory, safe
you remain, kitten

the cats who love me,
the kittens who stole my heart,
luckily, the same.

Extra bonus haiku

There’s no A to Z Challenge today because we get Sundays off to make 26 letters match up with 30 April days. But there were just too many good phrases going on here so here is the “official” NaPoWriMo entry retold in haiku, which seems better to me.

the end of winter
a single yellow crocus
in the warm sunlight

the end of winter
purple crocuses clumping
at the lawn’s brown edge

the end of winter
the cats finding their own sun
each at a window

the end of winter
the end of cold, ice, snow
for another year.

Day 12 NaPoWriMo

I wrote this and then tried a re-write with rhymes and meh. So here’s the non-rhyming version. I didn’t do my normal disclaimer of all these April poems being mostly un-edited. They are.

Almost Mid-April

This is the end of winter
the end of an endless string
of cold and snow and ice
the glinting trees and roads

This is the end of winter
windows, frosted daily, rattling
the harsh and chilly floors
the rime on the front hall door

This is the end of winter
to wake alone, outside the duvet,
the cats each to their own window
laying in the downstairs sun

This is the end of winter
to see the spears of daffodils
pushing through the leaves and
a single bright crocus on the path.

Day 11 NaPoWriMo

I apparently fell asleep last night thinking I’d posted this but apparently not.

It is dark in the car in the driveway
because, and only because, my eyes are closed.
I sit. The quiet, gentle and all around.
A bird chirps, and chirps again.
In the few minutes since the key was turned,
car key and house key, still in my lap.
No radio, no music.
The night is coming on
the April-sodden path is dusky.
up the steps, a little creak;
above the door a string of small white lights
no sky full of stars but equally cheering
where there’s not enough light
to find the keyhole
now that night has chased me home
and to my front door.
