This large cat, filling
the crook behind my bent knee —
kittenish no longer.the blank kitten stare,
looking, pouncing, waiting look:
grows knowing with age.Cat, too large to lift,
content now to sleep on lap
once a small kitten.Sleep my agéd cat —
in my memory, safe
you remain, kittenthe cats who love me,
the kittens who stole my heart,
luckily, the same.
