NaPoWriMo 2026, Day 9

I got an email with the prompt to write an ode for a very ordinary object. It’s not the prompt that appears on the regular NaPoWriMo page but there are a lot of prompts flying around in the ether this month and this one stuck with me today.

Oh Oatmeal, oh bowl of oatmeal,
you cook up while the coffee brews
two scoops of flattened grain slide in
to just one cup boiling water
a palmful of raisins perhaps
a grating of nutmeg, maybe
the big jar of brown sugar is
opened, gritty molasses scooped
Is there a dash of half and half
to be spared from the coffee
Put it all in the pretty bowl
ready to fuel most of the day
Learning “uwd” is Welsh for porridge
I fell in love with you again

atill life photo looking down on the corner of a laptop keyboard, a mug of coffee (regular) and at bottom a white bowl with blue onion design on rim, filled with oatmeal and a spoon. The things are on a cream color, woven placemat.
