NaPoWriMo 2026 Day 10

Spent part of the day with Mom doing a BJ’s order pick up and then lunch followed by the Friday Honk and Wave. Now I’m home and watching the return of Artemis II. Today’s NaPoWriMo prompt was about grief but in a different form, but I was thinking of all the younger folks who don’t really remember Sept 11, let alone the JFK assassination.

watching splashdown with so many
for some it’s childhood excitement
for others it’s first time thrilling
we all stare at our varied screens
We used to stare at our TVs
space launches, breaking news stories
a shooting, a woman in pink
then in black, veiled, as we all grieved
we asked each other, how how why?
We felt the familiar rising
the tears gathering in our chest
as we stood mute by the casket
we could only flinch together
as the guns went off in salute.

A view of earth from the returning Artemis II, as watched on my TV while watching it live.
