Welcome to the new year, here’s your box of tissues

this head/throat/head thing came upon me last night while I tried to pick up a few groceries. Oh well. I’ll save my plans for another day and hunker down with some beverages and some warm and fuzzy cats.

Be not alarmed at the changes in appearance here. I was trying to fix the problem with so many archives and links and the little widgets that handle that don’t play nicely with the earlier wordpress theme. Oh well. This one seems to have some possibility. Needs a bit of tweaking color-wise etc, but at least there isn’t a yard of archives showing.

Happy New Year 2009

Last night when I opened the front door to chase 2008 out and welcome 2009 in, no cats were interested in heading out. Why? Perhaps because it was 3F?

Nonetheless I kept my own tradition and went outside to see the turning of the year.

It was indeed cold out, but not as windy as predicted. It was breezy enough to make everything in the sky twinkle. On the ground, the trees sang out from time to time in their low, quiet voices. Some of the top-most smaller twigs chattered.

When I got good and cold I went back into the warm house, knocking the crunchy snow from my shoes. Then I shared a bit of port with the new year and we began our acquaintance.

Waiting for the new year

Ice Storm, December 13 2008

It’s been a somewhat quiet holiday season, which is quite ok. The weeks leading up to Christmas were not the norm: a big ice storm, a lack of power, a restoration of power, many days of continuing power blips, some snow, some more snow, a brief stint in the hospital by dad (who’s home and doing fine now) and then a nice family holiday.

When you work in the mall, shopping isn’t on your list of wanna-do things anymore. But as always, when I started, and actually started with a shopping list I was fine. All I’m gonna say is that I got some really lovely presents and that my brother enjoyed his yodelling pickle, as did someone in my niece’s household. (mine didn’t come from archiemcphee.com but thanks to them for putting the audio portion of the show online!)

Janet asked about fruitcake. ( /wave at janet! ) Got it, munching on it. Even the World of Warcraft is accepting of the rightness of fruitcake. It awards an achievement for eating holiday fruitcake, which is only available this time of year. Unfortunately it is soulbound, meaning you cannot gift it to others. Maybe that is their intent? If it were giftable I would stock up and shower it on people throughout the year. Instead, I give fellow players really big fish and other silly presents from time to time.
