awwwww (aka babies are cute but all-powerful)

I got stopped by this quote — In a Helpless Baby, the Roots of Our Social Glue — from the NYTimes today:

In the view of the primatologist Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, the extraordinary social skills of an infant are at the heart of what makes us human. Through its ability to solicit and secure the attentive care not just of its mother but of many others in its sensory purview, a baby promotes many of the behaviors and emotions that we prize in ourselves and that often distinguish us from other animals, including a willingness to share, to cooperate with strangers, to relax one’s guard, uncurl one’s lip and widen one’s pronoun circle beyond the stifling confines of me, myself and mine.

back again

One of the more mysterious things about being on the web is that things change and do things you don’t expect. Despite what was suggested I don’t think the problem was something on my end but it took a bit of deleting and replacing directories to get it all back and working again.

Likewise yesterday I rumbled off to work at my normal hour. More on the rumbling in a bit. Get to work and am met by a confused managerial type who says I am not scheduled to work, having requested the day off. This is true but I never saw a schedule that reflected that. So I left. In the blizzard. Instead of going home though I drove to Saturn where all the customers had said – oops – snow? not going to Saturn. And that’s how I spent a couple hours researching anthems on my iPhone, listening to great music as everyone around me watched looped news and soaps. Of course that cost me a nice chunk of change but my car’s front end doesn’t rumble anymore.

This photo on Astronomy Pic of the Day is worth a peek and a ponder! Nice one to mark the return of APOD to the blog roster.

There’s rummaging…

and then there is rummaging. I spent a part of tonight rummaging in the sewing room. Pushing back the stacks of fabrics, trying (successfully!) not to dump beads everywhere…. knowing I should re-roll quilts sometime soon. This put me in mind of a couple of quilts and I rummaged until I found them! that was good. I also found my journal quilts, also good. fabric and things made of fabric can sometimes all look alike. There is fabric – lots and lots of fabric. There are things made of fabric, tops, samples, quilted samples, finished quilts… more fabric…. batting. You get the picture.

And a big shout out to my co-worker Chad who finally hit the big eight-oh in warcraft tonight. Whew. I got to witness and capture the big flash for all posterity!

yet another monday, randomized

I know that when you have a large collection of quotes, chosen by yourself, it’s likely you chose them because you liked them. I am often amazed though how often the random quote chooser apparently picks out just the right quote, just for me. Coincidence? Who knows!

You are seeking joy and peace in far-off places. But the spring of joy is in your heart. The haven of peace is in yourself. — Satya Sai Baba

So when this quote appeared today, I can honestly say I wasn’t surprised. As I turn over the idea in my head – how do you explain peace as a possibility – it seems it’s hardest to convince someone or yourself that the answer is inside. Not everyone is wealthy but wealth doesn’t insure happiness. Not everyone has children or the perfect job or whatever. The happiness and peace comes from within and makes what you have shine in its goodness.

And it shouldn’t have surprised me at all that when I went to preview this post, this is what popped up as the random quote:

Anyone can carry his burden, however hard, until nightfall. Anyone can do his work, however hard, for one day. Anyone can live sweetly, patiently, lovingly, purely, until the sun goes down. And this is all that life really means. — Robert Louis Stevenson
