Pieces that make the whole possible

From Robert Genn’s email last night:

Emotional evolution means combining basic skills–such as the above–so that a unique voice and engagement occur. Finding your unique voice may not be everything, but it’s way ahead of whatever comes next. Emotional evolution takes time and patience.

He always gives me stuff to think about but this one was particularly good. He laid out five things, big things, to learn. He says, do you have to learn them? No. But learning them lets you develop everything else – your voice, what you do – because those things won’t get in your way. Learning them will help you.

But if you persist in this direction, [not learning them] your unskilled work will be like that of so many others–and you will begin to bore yourself. On the other hand, the skills I suggest are worth learning for their own sake–and they will stand you well no matter what you try to do.

Today: bit of cleaning, including the cutting table so I can pin. First: coffee.

Cat Cam Update

I think we’ve got the catcam up and running again. I picked up a *gasp* Microsoft LifeCam Studio webcam which purports to only support WIN of course, but of course worked as soon as I plugged it into the iMac. I’ll have to figure out a more secure perch for it, since it’s meant to perch on top of a computer (and there’s not much in the way of adjustment for laptop vs monitor which I think odd).

Anyway, all is well in catcam land.

Heart to heart with the cats

Had a little chat with the herd o’cats tonight. We laid out plans for my time home with them.

Them: Look lady, we’re running around by your feet. MIAOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. Prrrrrrrt.

Me (scooping up Razzie): here’s the deal. I pick cats up. I put them down. I pick cats up. I put them down. I’m gonna do that until you decide you like it. Got it?

Razzie (on floor again): WOW.

The folk process in action

Lately I’ve been learning a few new songs*. I’d consider them folk songs because they are old, passed down, different verions heard from different performers, all that sort of thing.

Through a strange bit of coincidence, I was reminded of Michael Cooney, on whom I shortly crushed many many years ago. OK, it might have been that I really just wanted his very cool rag-style jacket that folded up into its own pocket. But he was cute too in a debonair roguish kind of way and he certainly had a way with the song.

Anyway, I was reminded of him today and looked him up on the web. There was no photo of him years ago with the coveted jacket but I did find a link to an article about “What is a Folk Song” which I am sharing with you. Good reading!

Now I’m trying to remember if I bought the pattern for that jacket or just thought about it LOL.

** I’m thinking someone could come out with a study showing that the process for learning and keeping songs in your personal repetoire is conducive to good memory over time. You could probably get a grant for that, maybe from the car industry if you throw in singing in the car as being extra good for you.

Saturday Night

Couldn’t help but peek at my account over on Superior Threads (don’t you know that the newsletter from them refers to Mother Superior?) and **My Order Has Shipped**!!

Tomorrow’s Sunday of course so no mail. But that’s ok. I need to layer. Actually, first I need to fix one bit of seams along one edge which seem to need a little taking in. That’s ok. Will need a quick re-press anyway before layering. Layering. Pinning.

Ripping open of big package of thread.

Doesn’t get much better than that, eh?
