Day 18 #NaPoWriMo2012

Was lucky enough to hear former Poet Laureate Billy Collins on WAMC radio this morning. What a pleasure. He read from Horoscopes for the Dead and had fun talking with AMC’r Joe Donohue who’s just great at interviewing authors.

NaPoWriMo’s Maureen sounded like she could use a nap, here on the downward slope of National Poetry Month, and suggested writing a lullaby. I have to say it was fun and very calming to write.

27.

The day grows blue and quiet
the shadows deep and violet
All day the sun has watched you
Now the stars and I shall guard you
I’ve you in my arms
my littlest child, go to sleep.
Sweetest dreams, baby mine, good night

The flowers have all gone to rest
The birds are tucked safe in their nest
The cat is safe in his bed at home
Soon you’ll be asleep in your own small home
I’ve you here in my arms
my littlest child, go to sleep.
Sweetest dreams, baby mine, good night

The tall lady who lives nearby
sings to her own babe, lulalie
We’re tucking you both in for the night
May your dreams bring you smiles all through the night
I’ve you in my arms
my littlest child, go to sleep.
Sweetest dreams, baby mine, good night

Here’s your soft bed til returns the day
moonlight and starbeams will light your way
Dreams full of flowers and play will come true
tomorrow another day waits for you.
I’ve you in my arms
my littlest child, go to sleep.
Sweetest dreams, baby mine, good night

The magic that keeps thee shall shine
like the stars above on my baby so fine
Naught to fear for you through the night
and tomorrow will be your joy and delight.
I’ve you in my arms
my littlest child, go to sleep.
Sweetest dreams, baby mine, good night

    Another great one.

  2. De Jackson says:

This is just beautiful. I like that some images (cats, tall lady, flowers) are real, and others are so ethereal (magic, shadows). And that “baby mine” refrain goes soft, straight to the heart.

thanks so much for both comments – means a lot!

De Jackson – loved your poem today! PS. I tried leaving a comment at lunch time but couldn’t because it required a wordpress account and threw me out. if you have options you might enable other type log-ins to make it easier.
