Mid-August #haiku

This time of year there’s really only two things for eating:

Sweet corn hot, buttered,
peppered, dividing the plate:
the crown of summer.

Tomatoes, deep red,
thick-sliced with serrated knife:
mayo, salt, pepper.

Sweet corn’s hot kernels;
butter lingering on chin:
The summer dinner.

Monday: Day Off One.

Today I:

  • cleaned out my underwear drawer, threw some stuff out and made the rest fit in the drawer more easily. Two wind up alarm clocks, one non-working etc.
  • Went to pick up book ordered in Chatham. They didn’t have either of the other books not available through library or as audio. Decided I would go elsewhere and grocery shop on return trip.
  • Got stuck in traffic and did the get off at exit 8 and back on at 7- thing to get around it. Why DOT think it’s reasonable to close two lanes near Washington Ave bridge over I-90 is beyond me. One sign at exit 10 and not very readable.

In the “where’s a cop when you need one?” Dept: the blue car at right in the photo below had zipped up the shoulder of the road and what do you know, got stuck at a sign that was on the shoulder. I was laughing pretty hard but the guy behind me let him in. I sort of shook my fist at him when he tried to cut me off. Not gonna happen.

And PS: Crazy passing drivers, please be so kind as to CLEAR my car before heading into my lane. There were way too many of you today that I was sure was going to sideswipe me. One of you had both tires in my lane and your car was tire to tire with me. Please.

  • Because of the delay, Frankenstein ended just as I was pulling into parking lot. OMG – that’s how it ends? There?! What?!
  • Got a few things at other bookstore. Had a phone call and walked around while quietly chatting (moving to various less-populated places in store).
  • Homeward, stop at grocery store where two men with about 4 carts were finishing ringing up about $600 worth of stuff for local organization. Oh, so that’s what $600 of groceries looks like!
  • Stop at farm stand and get tomatoes, sweet corn, cantaloupe, peaches and fingerling potatoes. Male customer complaining to owner about prices. She’s explaining prices are about the same as last year. I think: not the same as they were 20 years ago when this guy stopped noticing everything changing.
  • Come home and put stuff away. Blanch green beans and put some in a vinaigrette. Cook small potatoes. Make coffee. About the time everything was cooked and put away and leaf lettuce washed etc, I realized I was hungry so I made dinner and
  • here I am. Now fed and hopefully with food to last a few days, I’ll be heading up to iron fabric and start making bias.

Things you find on the web

Thanks to my pal Naomi, who put me on to Matt Kish, I got to watch this lovely video tonight. I loved that my face was also in the story so here’s that too. It’s nicely spidery and fantastical and gave me a twinge of missing WoW, besides.

Sunday night at last!

Yes, that was me earlier today writing rodential haiku.

Yes, I packed my shiny bento box with a wonderful lunch that was going to be more like dinner.

Yes, that was me getting to hug Christine and Joe, visiting from california.

Yes, that was me at “lunch”, starting to write 320 words about Dracula and the non-defined religious aspects of fighting evil in the story.

And yes, that was me, taking torx screwdriver to an old 17″ mac book pro to remove the left speaker. (we were doing a training at work and passed it around until there was nothing left but a box of screws and parts and the outer shell!)

Now it’s me typing this after enjoying the Monty Python portion of the closing ceremonies of the London Olympics. Yes, that was me singing along and swaying to “Always look on the bright side of life.”

I’m probably going to step outside in awhile to see if I can spot any shooting stars.

And then tomorrow and the next few days: I’m going to get the binding made and onto this quilt. Yup. That’s the plan.
