Rolling around the stories

I have all these stories from the Fantasy/Sci Fi class mushed into my head and something had to give:

Creation: fine line
between bringing forth beauty
and being god-like.

step across the line:
intent spins out to madness;
creation to dust.

Disregard evil,
turn from friends and family,
lose what’s important.

Keep the pure within,
give love freely and do right,
rest without worry.

The opposite of desperation is…

I noticed someone had been looking at a post from February that mentioned this quote:

Anyone can carry his burden, however hard, until nightfall. Anyone can do his work, however hard, for one day. Anyone can live sweetly, patiently, lovingly, purely, until the sun goes down. And this is all that life really means. โ€” Robert Louis Stevenson

and when I went to see the post and quote, the quote box gave me this:

Life moves on, whether we act as cowards or heroes. Life has no other discipline to impose, if we would but realize it, than to accept life unquestioningly. Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy, and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such. โ€“ Henry Miller

Part of the discussion about shootings (another one in Manhattan today) has to include the idea of not only recognition and treatment of mental illness and addressing fringe political beliefs, but also the idea of community.

As a community, a society, we don’t want shootings to happen (that’s scary to each of us) but more importantly we don’t want people to be suffering to the point where they are desperate and see no alternatives. If they are ill, we need to offer them assistance and appropriate treatment. If they are unemployed we need to help them get work, get training, keep going. We need as a society to make sure safety nets are in place to keep people fed and housed safely, and to be a part of the society they’re in. Not “those people” or “those wacko right-wing-nuts” but you fellow person who lives in this same place as me.

When people are so cut off from possibilities and hope, what are their options?

This is too big a problem for a single post. Talk amongst yourselves. What can we do?

what day is it? Friday, you say?

Finished the binding last night but since I wasn’t ready with label I decided I’d tackle the bottom sleeve edge and label tonight. Went to bed thinking I’d get through a couple Poe stories and was instantly asleep. As in, wake up a couple hours later, lights still on, beverage un-drunk, lap full of open book and no memory of where I let off, kind of asleep.

So I gave it up, put away the book, turned out the light and went back to sleep.

I say this only because despite being ahead in several books for my online course, I’m stressing about finishing this week’s assignments. Geesh. How’d that happen? Tonight. Tonight.

This morning I finally got to work despite the state’s efforts to repave route 20 a mile or two at a time and jumped right in.

I think the most interesting and nicest thing that’s happened so far is that two different co-workers told me how much they enjoy reading my facebook links. Isn’t that nice? What I write here is linked to facebook and all, but the purpose of this blog isn’t just to be a collection of memes and links. I post interesting stuff more to social media sites. And although I do occasionally discuss current events and news here, I post more news links to facebook et all too. More timely and since I have a NYTimes account, I like to make important info available to those who might not have it available.

So there you have it – I apparently have some mad aggregation skills that my co-workers appreciate! And I appreciate knowing that they enjoy it!

Almost done

Binding is all done. Just have the bottom sleeve and label to go. Found the stuff for the statement and roughed up the label. Just need to do a couple tweaks there and print it on label fabric.

With that, it’s time to make tomorrow’s lunch and read some Poe.

I was listening to Cory Doctorow’s Little Brother. Scary. Much scarier than I’d expected, perhaps because it is a little closer to home and era.
