#technologyfail aka #ustream

LOL happily watching the hugo awards on ustream. They show the handful of clips, mostly from Dr. Who episodes for short dramatic presentations when BLAM:

Way to go for being um, ahead of the copyright detection technology… (pssst there’s this little thing called Fair Use you might want to brush up on. Go ahead and read that quickly why don’t you… we’ll wait)

UPDATE: No return of Ustream feed from worldcon, but I do see that Ustream has an updated wikipedia article (doubtful I’ll write a haiku about this one either…)

sunday ramblings #haiku

floating into sleep –
the night snugging tight ’round me,
the moon guiding me.

step back to the path
how to stay there with both feet
and know it as mine.

inner life of cats
not unlike the outer one:
life, ineffable

I mowed the front lawn
for the sake of the neighbors
Sheep would be better!

Meanwhile I heard this expression go by while I’m watching the Hugo Awards: “Filk”. What? What was that you said?

Filk is a musical culture, genre, and community tied to science fiction/fantasy fandom and a type of fan labor. The genre has been active since the early 1950s, and played primarily since the mid-1970s. The term (originally a typographical error) predates 1955[1]… As the Interfilk What Is Filk page[2] demonstrates, there is no consensus definition of filk. Attempts have been made to define filk based on various criteria.

I totally don’t know enough about filks or filking to write a single haiku about it, but I wanted to come clean. Heck. I’m a noob. That is all.

Yet another sunday

Did a bit of shopping, had to get stuff for the cats, silly demanding beasts.

While going around I was listening to the Librivox version of The Island of Dr. Moreau by HG Wells. I have to say that HG Wells has been a welcome relief in the coursework. I’d listened to The Invisible Man a while ago but I just found recordings of The Star and The Country of the Blind. Then I found Dr. Moreau.

HG Wells seems to make a huge leap out of late 19th century style and mind and into modern ideas and writing. Each of the stories have been riveting and with a nice “I’d like to read that again!”

I’m a little more than halfway through Dr. Moreau now. The odd bit about the librivox recording is that it’s one chapter per “podcast” and many different readers are involved. This has been less of an issue than I might have expected. There was one woman with a very low rumbly hoarse sort of voice but she was still easily understood.

It’s the law

I’m listening to The Island of Dr. Moreau which has the repeated phrase “…this is the law.”

Long-time reader Janet reports that this was her quote from the quote box today:

Live your life as though your every act were to become a universal law. – Emmanuel Kant

Trend?

All is forgiven

Came home. The cats acted as though they had no idea what I meant about letting me go to work with two different shoes.

Meanwhile the faeries had tucked my nanowrimo shirt into the drawer holding socks and Apple tshirts. Maybe they thought it was just another work shirt?
