I spent part of my day figuring out yardages and cutting schemes for a future family quilt project. Most of it was done in a program called Pages, but at one point I went old school:
It was a long and noisy night
Several waves of thunderstorms rattled through last night meaning that I got the whole bed to myself, since all cats used their super powers to become invisi-cats! The downside was that I had to close the window due to the monsoon rains that accompanied the banging and flashing. I did get some sleep.
When I got up this morning it didn’t surprise me that the wifi wasn’t working and when I went downstairs I made a stop to restart the modem. That usually fixes everything but not this morning.
I turned on the airport utility software and it said “no airport device found” – oh oh. I turned off the airport express (my wireless modem for WIN folks) and turned it back on and it flashed obligingly but didn’t do much else. Unplugged and replugged. Eventually the software showed me this

with the reassuring green dot and name of the network below. Phew. Thought for sure the airport express was a goner.
What is music?
this was very cool and had easier to hear music than the TED talk version.
scary things
It gives me great comfort that you can make a story scary without resorting to huge scary surprises and blood and gore. I’m not good at things that jump out at me but apparently suspense is most appreciated. (watching A Blind Banker, BBC Sherlock)
Why we do what we do, redux
Big discussion going on over on a list about blogging: why, how, how much. I read this with some dark amusement, having posted from time to time, even last week or so, about what I’m doing here and why.
Here’s another look from 2011, on the occasion of post #2000.
I guess as with all writing, especially long-ongoing writing, blogging has to be for the writer’s purpose and fulfill something for the writer. Benefits to the reader are a total bonus. The response from readers is fun but unpredictable and don’t serve as much of a motivation. If I were fueled only by comments I would never have made it past year one.
I wear my original blogger tshirt proudly, from back when Ev Williams (you remember him – blogger, twitter, branch etc) and pals worked out of somebody’s basement or garage – and I was so excited to have a way to do website updates. It was something beyond what I’d supported and done at Tripod for personal webpages and it’s the closest thing to a diary I’ve ever had. had a few off years but last year for fun I tried to have 1000 posts. Didn’t quite make it but it was fun in the trying.
So without further ado, on to the next posts! In the spirit of full disclosure, note the archive numbers on the right hand of the site and here’s a look under the hood, as of today and now.
