Day 14 NaPoWriMo 2022

Quick trip to the grocery store and swing by Mom’s. She was out pruning back perennials in her front yard in the odd eighty degree April day. I stopped on the way home to see a movie (going around a roundabout when I remembered that it was opening today). I was one of maybe eight or so in the theater. No noticeable sounds or reactions. Missed a storm while I was in the theater but saw it running ahead of me as I drove home.

Dear world – could you give me some relief from the whole “crazy would-be tyrant takes over the world a whole lot more easily than expected” thing? Thanks! Sometimes I need something less like the “real” world, ok? Just for an hour or two. And world? Could you keep the introductions to speakers short? Thanks.

my mind, wandering
through meandering intros
i’m losing my place

i’m losing this place
forgetting why I came here
what this is all for

today’s storm came down
charged with unmistakable
purpose and dark clouds.

the temperature dropped
the black clouds crossed and fled
on familiar paths

Day 13 NaPoWriMo 2022

Quiet day – made an appointment, took out some trash, made some coffee, admired the daffodils. I have had several instances recently of thanking Dad for teaching us how to watch for roadside critters.

when all colors fade
and the windows light with sky
daffodils still glow

thanks to my father
i watch for an ear to twitch
a revealing eye

several deer cross
now watch the side they came from
might be another

the eyeball spotted
turned into a small red fox
slipping into grass

Day 12 NaPoWriMo 2022

I took myself out to look at the clouds and hills today. Somedays that’s harder to do than others, so today it took a push. And another push to retrieve the paint stuff all the way from the back seat and to do a small cloud study.

Then it was off to Mom’s eye doctor appointment and I started the paperwork to get my records moved there too. AND I was able to get an appointment in just a couple weeks so I cancelled the eyeglasses-place appointment I’d set up for this week and will opt for getting it all done by an actual doctor. LOL I much prefer this.

Driving home tonight, had had to turn my rearview mirror to night view because of the bright sun setting behind me and was struck by the color change as I started down from the top of Lord Hill in Nassau. This is why I often say I live in the shadow of the Berkshires – it’s a little pocket of weather and shade and light that’s worth watching.

tipped over the hill
now the hills and trees were blue
day already gone

now the eastern clouds
tinged with leftover sunset
fled toward the dawn

at dusk, daffodils
just opened are bright above
last year’s crumbling leaves

Day 11 NaPoWriMo 2022

Well what can I say? I have been longing for Kasha Varnishkes and Mom probably thought – why is she making SO MUCH? But I have no problem. Well maybe a problem, but not with eating it.

kasha varnishkes
for breakfast lunch or dinner
I made a big batch.

thank you nameless cook
who put together buckwheat
and bowtie noodles

pile it on my plate
maybe just a dab of schmaltz
may i have some more?

Day 10 NaPoWriMo 2022

Where did the first ten days of April go? Today’s prompt from NaPoWriMo: “Today’s (optional) prompt is pretty simple – a love poem! If you’re having trouble getting into the right mood for a love poem…” seemed a mighty stretch so I put it aside when I read this morning, but when I sat down tonight after a nice dinner with Mom, this is what came out.

sunday used to be
newspapers and late breakfast
do you remember?

So much time passing —
do you think I’ve forgotten
waking with someone?

I live by myself
not that much different than
when you lived with me.

Well, Sundays may be different than years ago but hey now I get to see stuff like this:
