Days 15 and 16, NaHaiWriMo

and other stuff. Felt a little under the weather yesterday. Got through the day with cough drops mainly because I’d taken a couple heavy duty Motrin aprés shoveling and didn’t want to overdue. Three in the morning I wake up feeling weird and find I have no voice at all. Take some dayquil and when I woke up again to the go-to-work alarm I found it wasn’t much better. A lot of tea and some more sleep and I’m better but geesh already.

It must have been the reason why I fell asleep last night without even thinking about haiku. What?! I’m pretty outraged, how about you?

I, apparently,
drifted off to sleep last night
forgetting haiku.

I awoke at three
What is wrong I asked the cats
but I had no voice.

and then a couple to keep me honest for today.

Narrowed eye, glinting
A tasty glaze of crazy*
Unpredictable.

Inside this deep snow
the blue of childhood fortress
the cold silences

* With thanks to Grace Check for this nice turn o’phrase.

Day 14, NaHaiWriMo

Today I shoveled
snow, whole roofs and driveways full
tonight I will sleep.

leaning on shovel
I surveyed all the whiteness
of the muting snow.

snow dusting the porch
the trace of small pointy feet
of a calling bird.

Called in, a snow day.
Spent most of the day with snow
wielding my shovel.

People… It’s winter!

14feb14

Last night on the local news, there was a lot of focus on the weather. Natural, since we were hard in the clutches of a nor’easter.

The two news anchors though… kept talking about how it was “about time” that it got up to 38F (on this coming thursday maybe) and the one insisted it had been “too long” since she’d seen her lawn.

Seriously people? This is not Arizona or Florida. It’s upstate NY and it’s winter. Am I the only one hoping that all this cold and snow will put a dent in the tick population? Am I the only one who thinks, well, if we can get past St. Patrick’s day next month, spring won’t be too far off?

Get over it you weirdos. There’s supposed to be snow on the ground.

Having said that, if it snows more I’m not sure where I can stack up any more snow from the driveway because I can’t see over the snowbanks.

The plan

When I looked out at eleven last night there was just a dust of new snow but this morning there is a new foot of the white stuff. That’s as in, an additional foot on top of the eight inches or so we got yesterday. I’ve shovelled out as far as the car but came back in to get coffee and breakfast before continuing the shovelling.

The snow is up to the bottom of the mailbox from plowing and the end of the driveway is several feet deep from the road in. The rest is light and fluffy but there are high banks everywhere.

So that’s my plan. Lots of shovelling and coffee.

It’s still snowing, the very fine, insidious snow that adds more when you least expect it.

But first, coffee.

Day 13, NaHaiWriMo

The trough in the storm.
Stepping onto the dark porch,
Has the snow started?

The wind, cold, watchful
wraps around the birch’s limbs
scattering snowflakes

long day, some earl grey
bag in the cup, pour water
into canister.

Sleet at the window
Tomorrow’s Valentines Day
but winter cares not.
