TGI… Saturday?

Yeah yeah today was day six of six. Started out with hope and was dashed over and over again on the pointy rocks of retail reality, LOL. Pick up some Bully Hill on the way home and intend to do some straight forward sewing.

Yesterday was a Bow Tie Friday and a good time was had by all. Quite a few bow ties of various colors and styles. Mine looked like this:

Bow Tie Friday

Plug the iPhone into the sewing room boom box and first up, Josefin’s Waltz. This is incredibly tied up with my NaNoWriMo story and makes me teary almost every time I hear it. Next up:

Rene and Georgette Magritte
With their dog after the war
Returned to their hotelsuite
And they unlocked the door
Easily losing their evening clothes
They dance by the light of the moon
To The Penguins
The Moonglows
The Orioles
and The Five Satins
The deep forbidden music
They’d been longing for
Rene and Georgette Magritte
With their dog after the war
– Paul Simon

which just makes me sigh over Paul Simon’s incredible ability to use words.

But, the sewing machine is waiting. All those little seams.

A Day to Get Behind

Maybe the world just needs a little more Fred Rogers and a little less everything else.

That moment of triumph and…

That moment when you realize that at last you’ve finished piecing the first quarter of your quilt top in both directions* and feel pretty darn good about it… until you realize that it lost, in all seriousness, about 15″ of length in the process of piecing. The right amount. The expected amount. The amount that comes with a higher ratio of seam to square size. I get it. Thirty-one seams, a half inch per seam…

Sometimes math stinks.

It does look good hanging up on the wall. Just tiny. Tiny-er.

Also in the negative column for tonight: why isn’t there a single caramel in this house? That’s just wrong.

* For those new to the maniacal procedures used here to sew little bits of fabric together, a quick explanation. I lay out all the squares. Then I sew them all together in one direction, say top to bottom and then I sew them all together in the other direction side to side. Keeps everything quite orderly. The maniacal part comes from sewing a lot of squares together, matching the seams as I go. It’s called “my life, an inch and a half at a time.”

From the Past, and a Darkroom

While procrastinating a bit tonight I pulled my big Kodak-yellow box off the shelf and looked at my “portfolio” of photos from long ago Syracuse. Ah black and white. Ah, sweet smell of darkrooms. I can see what caught my eye then still applies today. These are just simple digital photos of those photos on heavy paper.

Back to work

Had a nice few days off and I’m determined to get this to the next stage of sewing.
