Thursday in New Zealand

A long drive from Murchison to Christchurch, filled with road construction and fantabulous views of mountains and geologic formations and rivers and all. It’s hard to be upset when the nice man says sorry there will be a half hour delay because they’re working on the road above here, and there’ a convenient food truck to get a drink – in my case a nice hot tea. Little break and then we were on our way.

All told between Picton and Christchurch about 30 points of being stopped for one way traffic because of road repair. Everything kept moving along pretty well in reality. Most of the repairs were because the roads are getting a lot more use than normal due to re-routing from earthquake blocked highways.

Got to the hotel and found our way to the school and got Marge all registered. While she was getting a tutor’s briefing, I went in and looked at the tutors’ quilts and two of the special exhibits. Then it was off to a happy hour and finally onto a bus bound for the Transitional Cathedral for the Opening event and awards ceremony. A good time was had by all. Can’t wait to check out the other exhibits.

Today we took the ferry…

to Picton, on the South Island and then Marge started driving – past Blenheim, through a lot of vineyards and eventually to Murchison. Saw a lot of families of kids on school holiday, grapevines, road construction workers, sheep, some very interesting plants, more sheep, dairy cows and cattle, a lot of very sharp pointy mountains and some mountains with snow.

See the whole Flickr album here.

If this is Tuesday, it must be New Zealand!

Had a lovely visit with Marge’s friend Sue, looking at her Works-in-Progress, enjoying her fine lunch and chatting outside. The day was exquisitely fine, trees flowering along with Sue’s garden and we sat outside awhile solving all the problems in the world.

Today we went to a quilt exhibit at Our Lady’s Home of Compassion, as well as an exhibit about one of the sisters, Suzanne Aubert, who is now considered “Venerable” in the Roman Catholic Church and who it is hoped will become New Zealand’s first saint.

Then it was off to lunch – and a wonderful lunch it was – chicken pate with a beet relish and ample ciabatta… mmmm. And a glass of cider and a flat white (aka coffee) to finish.
Marge had a twice baked goat cheese souffle, wine and a brownie.

We ended the day by going for a walk at Zealandia. What a treat – lots of bird calls and songs, a tuatara and birds!
