Day 5 NaPoWriMo

I remind you, gentle readers, that these poems are daily and pretty unedited.

this started as what might have been haiku-like:

Eye blue sky, clouds small
smaller smallest until they
pale to horizon

high hills and valleys
clouds pouring steadily east
glimpsed briefly, blue sky

looking up at clouds
we seek solidity where
water vapor rules

and ended as this:

Eye blue sky, clouds small
smaller smallest until they
pale to lavender horizon
pouring steadily eastward
valleys and ridged hills
sails across a weightless sea
bound to weather and sun
waiting for a wind
waving farewell to no one
throwing only shadows
at those who turn to look.

Day 4 NaPoWriMo

Grey stubble of trees along the river
fuzz along the ridges
waiting for spring
clouds grey above, water steel
hills dark, trees bare and shaking
in the hard wind of today
we’re all trembling,
waiting for spring
praying for strength
praying for renewal.

Day Three NaPoWriMo 2018

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality… Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The slatted sky shows bars of light and gray
this rearview mirror filled with returning light
history chases, pursues relentless
while trees wave, and houses watch in passing
the news is full of old things,
sacrifices of saints, deaths of heroes.
Who listens to their words, who notes?
Who keeps their dreams of justice?
Linking arms we’ve sung our hopes, like gods
wanting the power to be ours
to change the world each day
for good, for glory, for our salvation
Each morning we put it on, determination —
great shield and buckler. We’ve just to hold.

Day Two NaPoWriMo 2018

The drive in and lunchtime

On awakening,
scrim of snow, April second
all kinds of fake news.

On April second,
the snow, a scrim obscuring,
all kinds of fake news
pouring from the radio
dripping down the screens
Turn them off,
cut short the foolishness
and let anxiety settle
as best it can, if only
to a dull gripping
the snow, though ridiculous
is true. There may be more.
In truth there may be more.
But the lies which cloud
the rest of the world
must be seen clearly
truth welcomed
like the blue break
in those morning clouds.

Day 1 NaPoWriMo 2018

Now and again
I plop my two dollars down
rather randomly
not looking for biggest payoff
I cast my money down
for speculative numbers.
I’ve yet to win.
Yet may last awhile.
It has so far.
What do I buy?
A few days’ dreaming:
where I’d build the little house
a studio in the back.
The scholarships for
middle-aged women who
should have gone to art school.
Let them take good classes,
or have the time to work.
Shelves for all my books,
Time to read them,
maybe while on a train.
A cat or two to bother
and a garden for us
to sit in the sun,
considering our luck.
