Day Nine, NaPoWriMo

Cars seemed determined to jump in front of me today. Good for them that I’m an attentive driver but my attentiveness will not always overcome the laws of physics.

Cars this morning
pulling out of driveways.
I see them: some hesitate
judging, trusting,
daring, looking,
they do as taught:
right and left,
and then commit
There’s no second guessing
after you push forth
you hope that car slows,
the one in the near view,
hope they see you joining
the morning stream of cars
determined in their
migration to the normal,
morning destinations.
I, slowing as needed,
keep the social contract
and merge our paths.

Day 8 NaPoWriMo

I suppose all fifteen year olds
want to be closer to god.
They’re at the center of things
and they have questions
as well as all the answers.
They go, with confidence,
they go looking,
sure they’ll find god.
Adults shake their heads
knowing the fall will come and
supposing that all 15 year olds
want to be closer to god
just as they did themselves
awhile back.
They shake their heads knowing
that they don’t have all
the answers, now or ever and
the questions only get harder and
they wish they were fifteen again
just for the wanting,
the moments of feeling the almost
the going out and looking.

My thoughts wandered off after hearing this very young pop singer talking about how she had miserable teen years, and then she obsessed about songwriting which brought her closer to god…

Day Seven, NaPoWriMo

Seven days of April
noting what the world
is doing
and riffing human-style
with words
trying to tell you
of the changes —
the coming spring
the snows surprising
the little birds,
brisk clouds and wind
the world lays it all
out there to be seen
so while mindfulness
might be trendy
the world knows its
secrets belong
to the watchers, who,
pushing back wool caps
counting days of April
noting what the world
is doing, has done
is about to do
are standing at the ready.

TGIF, and for a new book

Molly better hope the book doesn’t fall over on her because it’s big. Really big. It came in a big box stuffed with a lot of crumpled up paper to keep it from moving around. The first handful of pages are double page spreads of paintings… It has a ribbon. It’s beautiful. It’s the US release of the show catalogue from the Melbourne AU exhibit:

Van Gogh and the Seasons

Day 6 NaPoWriMo

Saw this just before heading inside for work. I could have stayed longer and taken better video but… work.

First week of April
old snows have released
the remnants of last year
oak and maple and shrub
piled up and moldering, under trees
blurring curbs and corners
one dry breezy morning
they dance
like the scratchy pinwheels
they are,
lifting with the beat,
a swift circle in a square
holding hands with the wind.
An early spring celebration
squashed later by more snow.
