I knew what it meant

Dutch un·cle
noun, informal
a person giving firm but benevolent advice.

Strange but no one who heard me mention this had ever heard of it. Whatever. They did understand the concept when I explained having a “Dutch uncle chat” with someone.

update: Have been taking an informal poll and so far, it’s only my mother and I who knew what that meant. I’m doing my best to rectify this pitiful situation!
