On the 7th, Word for the Wise started with this:
Every now and again we indulge in looking at a word or two whose existence seems just plain unlikely . . . as in, who would think to come up a word naming “the enjoyment obtained from the mishaps of others”? German speakers, that’s who: the term schadenfreude was borrowed into English from German, the same language that also gave us the evocative sprachgefuhl (“language feeling” in German), which, in English, refers to the intuitive feeling for what is linguistically appropriate.
Ah those clever germans – thank you for the fantabulous guild name!
I love the word schadenfreude. Too bad so many people seem to experience that feeling so frequently. Speaking of words, I love your quotes. Where do you get them? Is there a widget or something I can grab for my site? I used to love the Lycos Gear quote thingie, but it’s too unwieldy to edit/manage.
It is indeed a plug-in and widget for WP – Shantz QOTD (quote of the Day) I don’t remember if I found it by googling it or searching WordPress, so I gave the link to the maker’s site.
I also had started with lycos gear (used to work for them many years ago) and had cut and pasted all my quotes into a text document. From there I cleaned it up and added to it. I have about 1000 quotes now in that file, which eventually got cut and pasted into that plug-in! woot!
