The big bang

I was going to type “stands for goodness” but actually the big bang last night made all my hair stand up on end, made the power go off for a long moment and made two of the three cats invisible for a couple of hours. I had been reading facebook comments about distant heat lightning and after awhile I could hear distant thunder. Closer…. closer… closer… close…. 1… 2… 3…. 4…. 5…. closer. !!BANG!! Big flash AND BOOM all at the same time. Eeks. I unplugged in the moment that the power was out – computer and backup drive. Went upstairs and got into bed with the lone visible cat. At one point had to close the freaking window because of blowing rain. Not what I wanted to do when it was still 80+F and humid as all get out. I had rigged a little fan in my room so it was bearable during the night.

This morning was quite pleasant and with three cats. I went to work and left the computer unplugged.

warez MB?

Had great time at East Side’s annual retreat to Son Rise camp – lots of work done by lots of gung ho quilters. I started out with a huge stint of ironing – all those seams to press open on the new quilt and then kept my head down and got all the crosswise seams sewn together too. Finished at 8:45 pm on Saturday night which gave me enough time to enjoy a glass of wine and a couple of jello shots!

Mom and I stopped at Adirondack Quilts in Glens Falls and i left with an armful of mushy-colored fabrics.

Since I’ve been home I’ve been shovelling out my sewing room and thinking about what to put in each of the two room at my disposal now. Still working out what will work and where it can all fit. I did get some anti-fatigue floor mats at home depot and finding out what a difference they make when you’re doing that huge stint of ironing or cutting! Four mats for $15 – the price is right for comfort!

Interesting things people say

Several people in the past few days have caught me typing my log in name – mbquilts – as I do various things at work.

“Oh, are you a quilter?” they ask.

“Yes.” I reply.

And then something else happens conversationally. Sometimes the customer or the wife-of-customer is a quilter etc.

Tonight the above dialogue happens. It’s the customer who is the quilter. She doesn’t add anything past those two lines of dialogue, so I ask “do you belong to a local guild?”

No. No she doesn’t. She never knows, what with work, and not knowing about work and when and well no time and well in a few years she hopes to be retired and have more time and maybe then.

Damn.

I had absolutely no response to that. None. I could have been the extremely forward outgoing force that said “don’t wait” or “even small amounts of time doing something you want to is better than nothing” or something. I could have said something. But I didn’t.

There’s no way that woman will be doing anything but waiting for retirement. She might make a quilt now and again. But she’s not a quilter. There was not a single scrap of thread anywhere on her person.

Damn. Don’t wait. Do what you love every stinkin’ day, even if it’s only for a few minutes.

Things you do on the way to something else.

  • Two halves of my quilt top, sewn together in one direction are back hanging on the wall.
  • The ironing surface (a jumbo-sized ironing board) is pretty much covered with fabric in a full array of colors. I cannot imagine I will really play with all that in the coming week but hey it never hurts to be prepared for plan B or C, right?
  • Guess I better pick out some thread to throw in there too. And some cutting tools. I want to get a new medium sized mat – all mine have cracked, warped or otherwise crumped.
  • Put some new music on my ipod by rearranging the playlists a bit.
  • Bunch of clothes/personal stuff to pull together. Books. Lamp. You know the drill.
  • In the middle of all that I figure: what the heck, I’ll throw in some wash.
  • Among things that went into the washer, clothes, some fabric of unknown pre-washed state and
  • a lingerie bag full of cat mouse toys. Strange but true – they wash really well. They go right into the dryer and from there they go into the big jar of catnip for release at a future date when the world needs some good catnip vibes.

Must.remember.bungee cords. LOL

Guess I should make a list.
