Units of measure

There are joules, and ergs and kilobytes. There are miles and yards and silly little millimeters. There are decibels, rads and pounds.

And then there are ways of conveying big things. Billions and billions and billions of stars has nothing on this from the National Grid homepage:

That is all.

Oh wait – after last night’s little “you have no outage” report from National Grid, my phone call was apparently scary enough (a co-worker said “they don’t call you mad dog for nothing!”) that we’ve been returned to the outage map:

Ever upward!

Swifter! Higher! Stronger!

and if you want to sing along… (go here if you need a reminder and a big smile too!)

Beautiful day in the neighborhood today (earplugs if you’re not inclined to generator noise) – beautiful sun and sky, everything seems extra shiny. Last night I got up to the story of Túrin in the Silmarillion and it made a lot more sense to me, even with the unbelievable hits of fate and curses and the doom placed on people and families. Just when you thought things were saved – BLAM.

Thus endeth the first day

Post Irene.

No surprise to have finally lost power last night. It was actually surprising not to have lost it earlier.

Drove on to see my folks and had a nice dinner. The sump pump area had reached homeostasis. If you bail it it refills. If you do nothing it just sits there.

It used to be a perk of power outages to be able to enjoy a higher sense of quiet and natural sound. Now it’s more like being stuck in the Lincoln tunnel with a lot of buses. Everyone (but me) has a generator and the world is filled with endless noise and fumes.

Ok. Book and wine and candlelight, night two awaits. I’m writing this from my car while recharging the phone (ska tomorrow’s alarm clock).

So long Irene

A blip of the smoke detector got me and the cats up this morning long before a normal alarm. Went everywhere in the house but nothing found.

Then of course it was on to the main event, the hurricane known as Irene. It was raining throughout the night and ramped up as the coffee brewed. It poured for hours. Some wind but rain was the main effect.

I spent a chunk of time pulling together info for a show entry, all the while wondering if I really wanted to hit submit. I did. And I resolved to put Bento to use to streamline that whole quilt data stream. Geesh.

Anyway. Doing a bit of quilting now. Had a few power blips so I’m coming to you from the iPhone. It’s bard to hit send from an unplugged computer.

So I guess blips to start and end the day.
