Still on the trail:

Obsessed by a fairy tale, we spend our lives searching for a magic door and a lost kingdom of peace. — Eugene O’Neill

If I had influence with the good fairy who is supposed to preside over the christening of all children, I should ask that her gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life. — Rachel Carson

Isn’t it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too? — Douglas Adams

I believe in everything until it’s disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it’s in your mind. Who’s to say that dreams and nightmares aren’t as real as the here and now. — John Lennon

Fairy Tales are more than true; not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten. — G. K. Chesterton

Every man’s life is a fairy tale written by God’s fingers. — Hans Christian Andersen

Busy weekend

Let us go forth, the tellers of tales, and seize whatever prey the heart longs for, and have no fear. Everything exists, everything is true, and the earth is only a little dust under our feet. — W.B. Yeats

Sounds like a good thing for just before a tale in two realms.

Whirlwind couple few days.

Saturday was my self-inflicted night of non-mandatory-fun: I went to see the Albany Symphony at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall.

After I clocked out of work, I changed into my fancier attire. This was totally worth the stunned looks of some of my coworkers. Very very funny. As I said to the manager “I clean up good.”

The concert was excellent. Three shorter pieces in the first half: a newly commissioned piece “violent, violent sea”; a john Williams piece commissioned in honor of the Boston Symphony’s retiring harpist who was in Troy to play it; and a Stravinsky piece. The could have left the latter at home. The first two were good- although I expected something more crashing and booming from violent violent sea. I wondered if I’d misheard what should have been violet, violet sea.

Beethoven’s 7th was wonderful. The conductor had explained that he went with beethoven’s time direction which made parts of it faster than most recordings.

Tonight it was work-related meeting. Not half as much fun.

This two nights of outings has put me behind in my nanowrimo stuff though so I need to catch up.

A nice end to the day

Happy Birthday to my friend and mentor Marge, way down there in New Zealand! Hope your birthday is going well and best wishes for the year ahead.

Hit 30K words in the land of NaNoWriMo which made me happy.

Found this on youtube which gave me great happiness but nothing on facebook would let me post it there, going so far as to post a completely different link. Very interesting, but weird.

Just the right person

It’s the most wonderful thing in the world (yeah you can hum that song if you want to)

Today I was chatting with a customer and he showed me his [local college] ID to ask about discounts. As we were chatting I asked (who knows why) “so, what do you teach?”

“Atmospheric sciences”

“oooh one of those weather guys.” I say. I’m all about the clouds.

“In fact,” says I, “I have one burning question about clouds and I’ve always hoped to meet the right person to ask. My question is: what keeps clouds together?”

“Oh,” he says, “the cloud itself keeps it together. Well, not exactly that, it’s more the air around the cloud keeps it together. So the cloud forms in the particular bit of air and the air that’s there keeps it in its form.”

OMG.

“So, the air around the cloud acts as a container for the cloud itself.” I summarize.

Yes – a container. That’s it exactly. In fact, he goes on, the clouds form at the bottom and the moisture moves up through the cloud and evaporates off the top.

OMG

We had a couple more minutes to chat about the color of clouds and what makes them “dark” (density of the water). He loves clouds so much he photoshops them into empty skies to improve the view. How extremely cool is that?

I cannot tell you how very long I’ve had that question. Now you know the answer too. (and it was cool that he said we could talk for hours about this stuff, which is totally true.)
