Day 27 #NaPoWriMo2012

NaPoWriMo.net suggested writing a nice nursery rhyme which was very appealing!

Most nursery and clapping rhymes have strong rhythms, use rhyme and repetition extensively, and aren’t overly concerned with making sense.

I must have been paying attention all those years. I should probably try my hand at a really silly nursery rhyme but this is the one that lunch time brought:

37.

The spiders will weave a silk blanket
to keep my babe and love warm
The owl will watch as you’re sleeping
to keep my baby from harm.
The stars will light up your dreams love
and the moon do a dance on the floor
a wee mouse will see that you’re covered
and the cat will watch from the door.
Your mother will spin a soft song, just for you
and sing it far into the night
tomorrow we’ll play and we’ll laugh and we’ll skip
but for now, my baby, good night!

Day 26 #NaPoWriMo2012

Maureen at napowrimo.net suggested an elegy and at first I wasn’t going there, but turns out it just turned that way. Perfect for the month’s theme.

36.

No, I’m not dying.
We’re not dying out.
Like the little café
you only went to once
and then were sad over
when it was gone
you’re letting us go.
You’ve got your earbuds
and your small screen
and someone’s voice
on the phone
you go to work and
you come home and
don’t make any stops
on the way.
I understand
time is fleeting
for you.
I watch the flow
of your generations.
For me the waves
of days and birds
and trees and skies
are endless.
You see the end
where the path
goes out of view.
I see it there
for you.
But I ask you, friend:
why hurry to it?
linger here and chat
let your heart believe
that you’re part
of my endless.

Late night #haiku

imagine! create!
the process fills me with joy
from start to finish.

Hostas a’rustle
a shiver in the tall grass
a small red hat seen.

middle of the night
cats hurtling down the stairs
upstairs, gnome laughing

Downstairs cats crashing
into walls into tables
collapse in a heap.

Day 25 #NaPoWriMo2012 Flying!

Was watching a movie last night about bird migration and as fascinating and beautiful as the birds are, I found myself thinking over and over again how much I would love just to fly as they do. It’s hard to imagine being so directly in the air and seeing the world move below.

35.

I ride the sky
when the day is blue
I spread my wings
and fly.
just up and up
to the lilac tops
where I rest
among the clouds
of spring perfume.
Somedays when the
breeze is stronger
I wait for a dove
or a brown wood thrush
and ride up higher
and higher
against the clouds
brushing the tree tops
sailing over the river
down there winding
reflecting the sky
and the clouds.

That piecing process

Some of you may be wondering why I am needing to start with a bigger square if I’m piecing IN pieces of fabric.

Even though I use seam allowances that are very small, sometimes the amount gained by adding a strip isn’t all that much larger than what I have lost to the two seam allowances. So that’s reason number one for adding a bit of extra to start.

The second more common problem is more of a geometry problem. Adding strips at random angles across a square makes it hard to have the square’s edges all line up again and not lose an eighth or so of an inch somewhere along the line. So, adding a bit of square to start with means I lop off some (usually a scant shred) but when I’m done I have a square with all its edges and all the squares are the same size to start. That’s a huge advantage when sewing them all together at the end. Trust me on that.
