You know, you do things in ways that have developed over time, for a long time. There’s a strong argument that things you do by habit often make things easier just because you can do them without as much figuring out from scratch each time. Not all things can be done by routine, but some of the process can and for good reason.
For instance: you (and by you I mean myself), just after starting to sew the first two columns of squares together, look down and see a square on the floor. A square that could belong to one of the first two stacks. Did it get knocked off one of the stacks? was it a stray? Will I get to the end of this first column and find one side is short?
My process is to take down the squares and put a pin at the top center of the stack. Not in the center, not in a corner. Top, center. The size of the pin leaves a small hole which you can see if you hold it up to the light. The fabrics are sometimes directional – stripes etc.
So after a moment of panic, I picked up the stray and held it up to the light. No pin hole.
