Mysteries not gonna try to solve

You might remember when I first got the Fiat that I did a certain amount of mumbling and grumbling about how the bluetooth system had been designed by someone not very intelligent (oh wait, that would be Microsoft) and that the USB connection took over the iPhone completely when connected, not allowing me to access anything music or otherwise: a totally blank grey screen.

So for a long time, it was just Siri and me and an audio cable. Siri, I’d say, shuffle the FOLK playlist. Playing Folk playlist, shuffled, she’d reply and we’d drive along quite happily. The only downside of this was that if my phone needed charging, there was enough noise generated by the car charger that I found listening to anything unpleasant. So it was power or music, not both.

The other night I needed power and I wondered again about the USB port in the glove box. I wondered if I could charge my phone that way and maybe listen to the radio, so I plugged it in. No grey screen. Hmmm. I’d been listening to the new Gaiman book previously and as I plugged in the headphone jack, it started coming through the speakers. What? I slid open the lock screen and there was my whole iPhone available.

Turns out I didn’t need the audio cable because… it was playing through the USB connection. What? Sometimes it starts playing the first song in the song listings – Abbott’s Bromley and then switches over to what I had last been playing…

Oh, and it even displays the title of what’s playing on the radio screen… What?

I don’t get it, but I’m not arguing because this is WAY better than it was a year and some months ago. And I’ve had the pleasure of listening to Neil Gaiman tell me about the mysterious happenings in a seven year old boy’s life as I drive around, so I’m quite happy.

Position Wanted

I’m thinking about putting in a “Position Wanted” ad –

Experienced Nephelolater with skill set to include wrangling of the feline variety and deconstruction and reconstruction of fabric of many varieties. Brews an excellent pot of tea. Takes no guff. Send offers of employment to….

last official act of the night

Having been impressed by my brother’s improvised cloth wall downstairs to keep the AC in a defined two-room area, I decided to try that in my bedroom rather than closing over the door and leaving it open a crack. The cats didn’t want to come in anyway but still.

So I used a set of curtain rod hardware and put up a rod to hang a doubled sheet over the door. I used a couple tiny binder clips to secure the fold and flap at the top and I’ll admit I put a couple tacks in the “hinge side” for good measure. You know, just in case the cats are so smitten with this idea that they start swinging on the gate.

So far two cats have ventured in. Molly sprawled briefly on the floor but they’re still quite suspicious. I will say the temperature gradient is impressive so I’m calling it worth the sweat. And there was a lot of sweat involved – day four of above 90 heat wave…

Luckily I had done a little venture into Tar-Jay today and came home with two 12 ounce camelbak water bottles.

I know that seems strange but I don’t want you to think they were from the summer fun and camping adventure dept. Nope, unbeknownst to me, summer is long gone and back to school is HERE. And there were a ridiculous number of family groups arguing about what kind of notebooks etc in the HUGE back to school area.

There were no bird baths. Sorry birds. If you were going back to school you might have a prayer of some heat relief. Have some Number 2 pencils instead.

I’m taking the advice of Ray Bradbury

Thanks to Sam Weller for the “daily bradbury” today. It was perfect:

Don’t let people bring you down. 1 Get your work done. 2 Shut up and drink your gin. 3 When all else fails, run like hell! — Ray Bradbury

From the Archives

We all remembered this picture but not where it was. When I ducked home tonight I went through the door and suddenly knew exactly where it was. Mom and Dad in the early 70’s at Brant Lake.
