Day 24, NaPoWriMo The Ways of Walls

Today NaPoWriMo laid this prompt:

Today, I challenge you to do the same (for one day, at least), and to write a poem that features walls, bricks, stones, arches, or the like. If that sounds a bit hard, remember that one of Robert Frost’s most famous poems was about a wall. Happy writing!

That’s certainly one of my favorites with its image of the two men walking their yearly walk along the stone wall that line their property:

Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder
If I could put a notion in his head:
‘Why do they make good neighbors? Isn’t it
Where there are cows?
But here there are no cows.
Before I built a wall I’d ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give offence.
Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,
That wants it down.’ I could say ‘Elves’ to him,
But it’s not elves exactly, and I’d rather
He said it for himself. I see him there
Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top
In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.
He moves in darkness as it seems to me~
Not of woods only and the shade of trees.

Good fences might make good neighbors, but it’s always good to see what we’re walling in or keeping out, whether stone walls, picket fences or old disputes and bias.

The walls that topple and crumble in woods,
stones laid one atop another by hands long unknown,
keep only a memory of cleared fields
or logging roads laid through surviving trees
all walls set on the ground decay with time then
and spill their contents past a garden’s edge
or let the grass grown through until the stones
can only be found with an accidental spade.
Where I might forget the grit of anger
or stony scorn passed hand to hand to hand
family boundary standing stiff and proud
resisting blurring by forgetfulness
Time, rain and wind softens the stones to earth
exposing the heart takes care of the rest.

Day 23, NaPoWriMo In honor of

William Shakespeare, on the 450th observance of his birthday.

And inspired by the sonnet offered by The Writer’s Almanac today in honor of The Bard.

When I appear to be doing nothing
which might be most of the time so it seems
I sit and stare at my most current darling,
at the future, and wonder at the dreams.
The ghosts of thought, the wisps of what might be,
the fear of what time might deny and kill
splash shadows long and blue down what I see
and shake the joy of process to fulfill.
In moments where the puzzle falls away
and path to process spins and then unwinds
there is a dark and perilous bit of fray
the hunter stalking steadily the hind
that fear of never seeing this complete
that chases each idea with process sweet.

Earth Day 2014

I remember some of the original Earth Day. I don’t remember exactly but I would guess that about that time there was a several week class or seminar that was held in a local church about environmental awareness and there was a lot of coverage in the local news. My family was interviewed for the paper about my Dad using a manual push mower to mow the lawn and we had participated in a research project to measure pollution using a small collection device mounted in our yard.

There was a lot of awareness building and peer pressure to pick up trash and reduce and reuse.

Does it seem like we’re still fighting that uphill fight? I wish transportation would be more energy efficient. I would have guessed by now I wouldn’t be using gas or using a mere fraction of what I use in this supposedly efficient car. When I travel the roads are lined with trash, although civic-minded people sign up to clean it all up from time to time. Corporations still try to get away with stuff until someone convinces the government to put an end to it.

There are some companies that try hard to do the right thing and that makes us feel good. How do we do more?

audio fellowship of the rings

I am surprised as I’m listening to the fellowship of the rings how often my brain goes to Lotro maps rather than the movie.
