OK, now what?

So okay – there you are in your room with the shade down and the door shut and the plug pulled out of the base of the telephone. You’ve blown up your TV and committed yourself to a thousand words a day, come hell or high water. Now comes the big question: What are you going to write about? And the equally big answer: Anything you damn well want. — Stephen King

Pretty sound advice from the guy who says to write with the door closed and re-write with the door open!

Why I work “big” (from the quote box)

I don’t think my pieces are particularly big, I guess because I can imagine working much much larger. But other people often comment on the size, never in “wow that’s big!” comments but almost always in “I could never work that large” ways. Chacun à son goût, eh? Oui!

I want to be very intimate and human. To paint a small picture is to place yourself outside your experience, to look upon an experience as with a reducing glass. However, when you paint the larger picture, you are in it. — Mark Rothko

Tuesday

Well, I don’t know if the eye glass place in East Greenbush is actually participating but the lady at the counter said, “of course we take that insurance!” She took all my info and we agreed on an appointment day and time for next week. Even if the insurance doesn’t totally cover things I’ll probably come out all right since I always seem to end up dropping quite a bit of change even when I go to a “participating” place.

Now I’m back home continuing the fight against paper stuff and trying to push books back to where they belong and the rest of it out the door. This week I may run out of room in recycling! Woot!

Everyone else is napping!

Weird Monday

Started out early this morning with an oil change. Because well, sometimes you gotta.

On the way home I was thinking about how if I had about a half to a whole mil I could buy up a really large handful of property in the Village of Nassau and do what I want with it. That would be fun. One building that’s for sale in particular would be suited to my personal space needs but being commercially zoned has expensive taxes. Not that I’d care if I could afford to buy all those properties, LOL.

Came home, threw in some laundry and did weird little bits of cleaning, made numerous runs out to the recycling bin with paper stuff mostly, and it looks like I did absolutely nothing. And trust me, it could stand some looking like I did something

The antidote to this is to get a pot of tea together and sit down to sew beads on stuff because you know, at least that looks like I did something even if it takes a long time to get a substantial amount done.

Birds doing weird things

One bird, a mourning dove, sat atop Mom’s squirrel-proof feeder. They’re on the edge of being able to use that feeder since they weigh just about enough to close the seed chamber if they sit on the perch. Since they’re ground feeders generally, this isn’t a problem and I’m not sure why this one was sitting on the feeder’s roof.

A White-breasted nuthatch flew up to the perch. The mourning dove looked at him with one eye, head cocked, over the edge of the roof.

The Nuthatch swiveled around the perch so he was hanging upside down from the perch and opened up his wings wide and made all sorts of threatening, look-how-big-I-am-or-maybe-I’m-a-bat, sort of gestures at the dove. He did this for several minutes popping up a couple times into normal position on the perch and then rotating around again.

Mom and I were so fascinated by this that neither of us thought to try and grab a photo through the window…
