Welcome to Lake Te Anau

Left Dunedin this morning and we took a ride through very pretty and increasingly green land toward our destination Lake Te Anau.

Found our motel which is pretty darn spiffy with a nice kitchenette and huge bathroom. All of our accommodations have been quite impressive. Even the Penguin Place Lodge which was a “bring your own linens” place had a communal kitchen with about everything you could need or want and a big refrigerator to stash your pile of food (not shared). This one has a small frig, two burner range, sink and enough dishes and glasses and utensils to do nicely for most people. We used the microwave tonight to prepare some frozen Indian dinners that we brought back from a nearby grocery and we lunched on a salad with smoked turkey and fresh lettuce and other stuff. Our meals eaten in and out have been quite nice. Oh and as you might expect when you get tea out, it’s made with boiling water, often in a two cup pot with real tea. Milk and sugar on the side.

But enough of the culinary report.

First up, a photo from yesterday’s outing to the Otago Settlers Museum. This is a table where bank customers would pause to fill out their deposit slips etc before proceeding to a teller.

The museum was a shining example of incorporating technology into displays. There was a welcoming large video that was about the creation of the world from the Maori view and went smoothly into the coming of new peoples to this land, to prepare you for what you were going to see. There was a big room that was hung floor to ceiling with painted and photographic portraits of settlers. Interesting enough, but there were four table-like digital displays that let you choose one of the paintings on the wall you were facing and learn more. Also a good way to look at things too high up! There were also videos with a variety of people who told stories of their families’ past.

After arriving here today, we walked around, went to the grocery store and enjoyed the ability to watch the lake and other walkers. This is a Eucalyptus tree, one of a row of really large ones near the water.

Eventually evening came and spread itself over the lake. We readied ourselves for tomorrow’s adventure, so stay tuned!

Greetings from Dunedin!

First off, it’s said: dune-EDEN’. I have a hard time keeping that in my head. I’m working on it.

Last night we squeaked into the last penguin tour. Our lodge-mates, which included some folks originally from South Africa, a young guy from Spain and a lovely young woman from Finland, indicated that Royal Albatross tours didn’t start until 11:30 and they might be booked up.

We headed up there though and someone went through the front door, and when we went up, the woman inside asked “are you with the cruise? would you like to go on the tour here now?” which was before they even opened! Score! After an orientation, we hiked up to an observation area and there, for all to see: baby albatrosses! They were fuzzy and cute and occasionally flapped their little fuzzy wings. Our guide gave us more information about the birds in general and how they band the birds for identification so they know they can live very long lives. One female lived 62 years and had four mates. They lay one egg per year and spend their first five years flying.

Coming back from there we saw Royal Spoonbills, which had been mentioned in the Centre – Life Bird! (We also stopped at a place called “Happy Hens” – more about this another time.)

Now we’re holed up in the Leviathan Hotel in downtown Dunedin and resting up for a nice dinner.

Southward toward Dunedin

Marge and I left Lake Tekapo this morning and traveled to the next, Lake Pukaki to see her son’s property there. Along the way – Mountains – with a capital M. and from his land a fabulous view of Mount Cook and neighbors.

It is easy to imagine great battles taking place in the flats leading up to the foothills, with the bigger mountains rising up behind. Lots of vineyards and cattle, dairy cows and sheep along the way.

It was a day of short walks – first up Matt’s land, then to a roadside stop to see Maori rock painting, then to see the Moeraki Boulders, then onwards to the Dunedin Botanic Gardens and then finally to Penguin Paradise Lodge where we arrived just in time for the tour to see PENGUINS!

Boys and Girls – Penguins is Penguins! Seeing real live penguins in their natural habitat is a site not to be missed. The tour was quiet and respectful. It ended with a tour of their hospital facilities for lost and underweight penguins (although the guide said this year a bumper crop of barracuda have added to the injured penguins brought to their care.)

Greetings from Lake Tekapo

This morning we rode and walked around the cathedral area of Christchurch, where they continue to work on taking down earthquake-damaged buildings and putting up new ones to take their place. Quite sobering but hopeful too. They’ve put a lot of work into making places attractive to residents and visitors and if you’ll check out the flickr array you’ll see lots more of what we saw.

We drove up to Lake Tepako, stopping briefly in Geraldine. The view from our room is amazing and we had a good walk both at the little church and around the outlet of the lake itself. Many other visitors were wandering around too.

Late in the day we noticed this amazing bit of cloud, coming over the mountains across the way. (OK, total geek moment here, it reminded me briefly of the flooding of the Bruinen in LotR. OK, you can stop laughing now!) It would have made a great time lapse video as the clouds poured over the top ridge and then over into some of the gullies.

We had a nice dinner in a local pub with a big window to watch the cloud situation unfold and now we’re ready to face tomorrow’s adventure.
