B – Happy NaPoWriMo

Baby, my Baby
sleep now, let us be at rest
you’ve worn mom out too.

Sleep baby. Dreams come!
Make a bower of rest here
for mother and child.

Oh sleep, baby sleep
wrapped in your warm carefree dreams
watched over by love

Day One, NaPoWriMo, evening edition

Dedicated to new mothers out there.

Sleep While the Baby Sleeps*

Gentle, worn out mother
filled with love
taken by exhaustion;
your own, small, wee love
lays finally sleeping
relaxed and rosy,
your own hand large and still
inches from the tiny fingers
the curve of eyelashes
the last you see
before your own eyes
simply
happily
close.

* This was advice often given by my Grandmother Mulligan to new mothers.

A – Happy NaPoWriMo

April, siren month
flashing petticoats of spring
and an icy smile.

April, sneaking past
the last of March’s midnights
smiling secretly.

April, in winter
remembered: warm rain, fair skies,
drifts of daffodils.

The Eve of NaPoWriMo and April

I like this little tradition of writing an eve of April poem just before the start of National Poetry Writing Month. I had written a poem earlier today and when I read the offered prompt of “why not try writing your own poem that begins ‘I guess it’s too late to live on a farm’?” That wasn’t quite the direction my second poem took but it turned the same corner.

Too late I guess, to live the road
where all is fresh at every turn?
No glancing backward in the mirror
at the recent past receding.
Even as the road goes I would go there,
new ways, new folk, and new tales only
and never miss the agéd chair,
the well-worn, paint-less step,
the old cat shining on the floor,
the familiar dishes by the sink.
Each day, new and new again
until with neither sigh nor sadness
I’d meet the past anew as new again:
and stay a moment, then move on.

That time of year again

March 31 has rolled around again and, while hardly recovered from my recent travels, it’s time to pick up the challenge for NaPoWriMo again. There are a few hours still to ponder any sidebar themes or parameters although there’s one in place that shall be revealed as we go along – see if you can figure it out.

Several things arrived unexpectedly today – surprise arrivals are always welcome, right?

First off, a little package which claimed to be from Amazon but which turned out to be part of my Abesbooks order and just in the nick of time!

I already like it, just after a few pages! I’ve got a few more things enroute.

In my more virtual mailbox, came a “Robert & Sara Genn Twice-Weekly Letter” which had some great stuff about finding your artist mission and also had this great quote:

You are free and that is why you are lost. — Franz Kafka

OK, off to ponder the month of April and all the words that lay ahead. Back later for a pre-April jumpstart.
