S — NaPoWriMo

The last week or so I’ve found myself starting the day’s A to Z entry by typing something like:

S

singer songwriter
salad
sincerity
salami (and eggs)

and then developing one of these for the day (more common) or choosing something else (less common). It just struck me that this is one of the pieces of advice given by Ray Bradbury to make lists of things which can be used to inspire or kickstart one’s writing. A list of ideas or just things, for when you need a start or a “what if” or a “what happens next is…” Thanks Ray!

late night treat, college:
close to snack bar’s closing time,
salami and eggs

salami and eggs:
imported from long island
favored late night snack.

eggs, add salami
fry it up in a hot pan
eat, relish, repeat.

why keep salami
hanging in your dorm closet?
salami and eggs!

Day 21 — NaPoWriMo

The Morning Commute

The songwriter sings in the car
that it’s love that makes it all work.
Listening while driving in the fog,
following the tail lights ahead of me
I can’t but hope he’s right:
that I will find true love,
that it will set the world straight,
be more important than the job
I’m driving through the fog to
for reasons I can’t explain anymore.
When the chorus comes around again
I can’t help but sing along
the words rolled up with the tune,
the hope strung up with the words,
the car coming out of the fog.
It’s another morning.
Here’s the highway.
Cruise control, on.

Miscellaneous things seen on the cutting table

Last night I ironed a bit and tonight and tonight I did a little pencil and paper work and while I was pushing stuff around on the cutting table, this gave me a chuckle* and I thought you might get a jolly out of it too.

* (not as big a laugh as the mail from Fairpoint offering to give me some sort of internet technology support for MONEY – how about you just keep your service up and running folks???)

R — NaPoWriMo

Am I rational?
Make a reasonable request —
I’ll consider it.

rational thinking
only gets you to the point
of other options

If your rational
and my reasonable meet
we might have a plan.

Day 20 — NaPoWriMo

I did take a little road trip today, over to the Clark to see a painting on loan there. Took a quick tour around and visited old favorites and saw the wood/linocuts too. Cool stuff.

NaPoWriMo had a suggestion “Darkness and Light are powerful things that can mean a lot. Use them as inspiration for your poem today.”

While I was driving around yesterday I was listening to random songs by Paul Simon, thinking what a fabulous song writer he is. His lyrics just make me glad that someone can write that way. I can’t do that but I did play with a more song like structure to go with my road trip.

I let the wind blow me up the road today
up the road and across the hills
the sky turned to dark
and my heart grew too light
to be earthbound again
just let it go
i just let it go.
the rain came along up over the hills
and the green hungry ground
held out its arms and drank it all in
the trees were singing out
and the trees were swaying
hallelujah
they were singing it out.
while the rain blew all around
and the trees danced with the wind
I chased the darkness over the hills
and my heart grew too light
to be earthbound again
just let it go
i just let it go.
