NaPoWriMo 2023 Day 18

I’ve been cleaning a lot inside and today I must have been overcome with a different sort of spring cleaning – that primal urge to prune. Tonight I am legit tired.

when least expected
you may be overcome with
an urge to clean

perhaps not cleaning
exactly but chopping
away the old brush

scarier to start
if it comes to a chain saw
I will be careful

evening finds a
newly cleared patch of ground and
a big pile of brush.

NaPoWriMo 2023 Day 17

and a Happy Haiku Day to all! A welcome rainy day here, cool enough to welcome a light sweatshirt but warm enough to relax into spring. Apologies to Bob Dylan for today’s first haiku du jour.

Hard rain gonna fall
thirsty ground unweeded
takes in every drop

When the first drops fell
everyone paused turning
toward the window

rainy days, required
the blue-gray skies setting off
yellow-green tree buds

aren’t we all looking
the solid edge to stand on
the leap rushing up.

I am in the present. I cannot know what tomorrow will bring forth. I can know only what the truth is for me today. That is what I am called upon to serve, and I serve it in all lucidity. — Igor Stravinsky 1936

NaPoWriMo 2023 Day 16

Thought it would rain. Maybe tomorrow. But I found another way to give the garden some moisture.

The sun runs laughing
between the dark gray clouds
the dry garden waits

white throated sparrow
practicing vibrato
from an unseen perch

refrigerator
still defrosting while I
eat leftovers.

In the garden
freezer ice melts slowly
bonus from kitchen

NaPoWriMo 2023 Day 15

Halfway through April already? No snow on the daffodils? I’m grateful each morning and evening for this brief time with them, sneaking extra looks throughout the day. I stopped and found some basil seeds but will have to go elsewhere for catnip.

The sun slants across
the hilltops this evening
the air is turning

daffodils pouring
out their gold to passerbys
begging for rain

morning and evening
moments the spring blossoms show
the light within them

NaPoWriMo 2023 Day 14

Another unseasonably hot day. Tomorrow I may have to seriously water the front garden.

is it April?
Open another window
onto August.

No april showers
the daffodils need a drink
I share dishwater

Deer descend here
to eat the daylilies shoots
eschewing green fields.
