Happy Birthday J.R.R. Tolkien

Happy Birthday J.R.R.!

…the night-sky was still dim and pale. There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach. His song in the Tower had been defiance rather than hope; for then he was thinking of himself. Now, for a moment, his own fate, and even his master’s, ceased to trouble him. He crawled back into the brambles and laid himself by Frodo’s side, and putting away all fear he cast himself into a deep untroubled sleep.

Remembering Andy M. Stewart

This song from Silly Wizard, featuring Andy M. Stewart, has long been in my top playlist.

Recently saw a notice that Andy M. Stewart, of Silly Wizard, had died during the holidays. Very sad new indeed. Fiona Ritchie mentioned him as she started tonight’s Thistle and Shamrock show with several tunes by Silly Wizard. When I went to get some general information on the group, I read down about the members – all memorable! – and then found this on Wikipedia: “The band played its final performance in Voorheesville, New York in April 1988.” Damn. Stay out of Sm-Albany folks! This is confirmed on their official history site:

After 9 albums and around 17 years of touring the band decided to call it a day and gently closed for business after a final album “Glint of Silver” in 1986 and a couple more tours taking us to our final gig which was at Bill and Andy Spence’s “Old Songs” in Voorheesville NY. in April 1988!
