Today was the day, haiku-sorting day
to take each small poem and describe it well
choose a category or two for each
ultimately to judge each one’s merit.
I poured all the words and lines together
let the computer pretty and tidy
poems written, a handful or two a day
more than I would have thought: there were many.
I suppose I could have rewritten them
one to a card, permanent ink and all
but I used the time all digital
to read and reflect on each set of three
Not enough categories suffice now,
I stir them well and look for shiny ones
I’ll just say that after I mushed around all 290 haiku from October to now into the database with the rest, I found it hard to assign categories I’d used before. I didn’t think it would be a good day to rank them – I know my limits! Some of them did make me smile.
