The WriMo folks have put together a nice top ten list so you can spend the next 30 days gearing up to do NaNoWriMo. Get your head around the concept, make some space in your life, prepare your others that you’re doing this and prepare your mind to be amazed.
And the #11th reason (other than that if I can do this, so can you!) is “why the heck not?” There is no reason not to set down a bit of time each day to do something you’d like to do. All kinds of people spend an hour a day or more doing something like watching TV, checking facebook etc. Borrow that time back to do something you’ll have something to show for at the end of the day.
When people tell me about all the patience it must take to make a quilt I always explain that there’s nothing about patience that gets you through a big project. Patience pays off when you have a problem to resolve, when you’re learning something new etc. In the end though, it’s persistence that wins the day and that means persistently working on your work, no matter what it is, every day, even if only for a short while. It’s all those little bits of work that get it done and there’s no known anything to change that.
So get in there and do the work! And watch out: November first will be here before you know it!
