It was a slug sex I tell you! and other #haiku and #haikupedia

So I’m walking through the weeds along the shoulder of route 20, looking for my hubcap, thinking people are just slobs, throwing their garbage out windows all these years later, when I look down, eye caught by a pearl-like globe:

slugs, mating

I take a couple photos, observe without touching and move on. I posted the photo on facebook and it got questions. So I looked into it. I originally took the white globe as an egg (thinking it odd and improbable. Always go with your gut on those feelings). Turns out I’d caught the two slugs, Deroceras reticulatum, in flagrante delicto. How’s that for a wallop of latin? You will be latinized!

Yup, it’s true. Tis the season for slugs to reproduce and then die with the coming of the frost, leaving the next gen to be around for the coming year.

and now, the obligatory #haikupedia

Limax maximus
recent immigrant you come
to eat our hosta

I have not seen you
only smaller versions, true,
Limax maximus

Two Deroceras
met in the woods and I, I
just stood by, watching.

Two Deroceras,
the reticulatum
kind,
met and made some more.
