OK it was definitely Cazenovia. Pat, Sue, Naomi and I headed off early yesterday to attend the lecture and opening of The Art Quilt Experience. I was looking forward to hearing Jonathan Holstein talk about anything and he did not disappoint. His stories about early quilt collecting were interesting and educational. He used quilts from his own collection as well as antique and new quilts brought in by others to base his lecture on.
Then it was off to see the first round of quilts at the Stone Quarry Hill Art Park. Nice turn out of quilters and others, including Pam Allen from Canada. Was great to see her again and chat a bit. The room of quilts on exhibit there is well lit and just the right size that you can stand in the middle and see everything. I did get asked by someone quite seriously if my quilt was appliqued… um. no. seriously. no. definitely pieced. as in seams. not appliqued. really.
After awhile we piled into the car again and found the next exhibit site at the Cazenovia College – Art Gallery Reisman Hall. Also very nicely laid out but more nooks and crannies. Of course the feel at opening is different than what most folks experience later when there are fewer folks.
Before the festivities started we had lunch at Dave’s Diner/Common Grounds which was right next to a lovely quilt shop on the main drag of town and turned out right around the corner from the college art gallery.
Lovely day – we drove out and back on route 20 which was scenic and pretty direct. Just have to watch the speed limit changes as you go through the small towns. Some beautiful views coming and going and one patch of surprisingly heavy fog on the way out.
I got a copy of the show poster and catalog. Was surprised when I looked at the catalog later to find out they had put only a “detail” shot of my quilt. This is also known as “we only have room for a page of square images here”… OK whatever. If that’s the worst that happens in a show process I guess I’m good.
Today I went to the funeral for my Aunt Marie, had lunch with my family and then shipped off the two quilts to Sacred Threads in Virginia. So right now I have four quilts out on the road doing various things. A couple I won’t see for awhile, so must be time to figure out what to do next.
Thanks I did enjoy the show. Enjoyed seeing your friends and you there enjoying it.
Wonderful pieces. Glad it was another great day at a quilt show.
