When i can’t deal anymore with the amount of money spent daily for war (instead of education and food and showing care for our fellows), I take comfort and inspiration in tales about people doing their work on a daily basis.
Here the NYTimes helps me out with a great piece about David Hockney. The two video pieces with the article are wonderful. Makes me want to get out my “speak yorkshire” training CD!
Something that allows me to smile through the wierdness of hours spent at the library reference desk: “Sometimes the rest of the world is in training.” I don’t know where I acquired this – I suspect it was part of an “Unshelved” online comic strip – library based and very funny. It’s a bit too egocentric (as is “All the world is queer but me and thee and sometimes….”) but it does allow me to give the benefit of doubt to some people and events that are a bit too much. (Like the woman who refused to believe that any countries in addition to the United States were included in “North America” and considered maps showing evidence to the contrary to be evidence that “things nowadays are getting worse” and caused by recent bad changes…I guess she wants to blame Obama for this.)
