This was one of the books offered by the New York Public Library in a collection on how to draw. You can see and flip through the whole book here or see all the NYPL’s suggestions here. They allow as they have “a few coloring books, but we’d prefer that you not color inside them.” Have to hit an art supply or book store for that. Meanwhile here’s a how-to from the late 18th century.
