In front of school, a block of granite stood
dedicated to the fallen soldiers
I don’t remember what specific war
or if there were smooth spaces to add more.
My family didn’t go to parades
so yearly the arrival of flowers
red white and blue with their matching ribbon
was a mystery to my schoolgirl self.
The memorial stands there yet today.
In my age we practiced duck and cover,
now children of a different world and time
fear not the nuclear but random acts
the massive or small or global warming,
ready to lay flowers at any curb.
